I went to bed last night feeling absolutely miserable. Cold symptoms, painful stomach and just generally icky. When I woke up this morning it was worse AND the time of the month decided it would come and visit me.
I was all geared up for staying at home when I saw the rain and wind outside, but shortly after breakfast, the wind appeared to have died down and it was lovely sunshine outside!
So, against my better judgement, I got my jods on and jumped in the car. Got Neddy in, tacked up and spent about 10mins trying to get on the bloomin' animal! He just wasn't staying still. Eventually managed it and off we went.
First, we saw a van, which he was sure was evil, so we had a little spook at that, then some men collecting rubbish off the verge appeared (doing a good job, I might add! Those verges are horrible) and he didn't like them either. By this time the wind had really picked up, but I knew if I turned back, his napping would be 10x worse next time I tried.
Then we came across a lady and her horse, who were trotting towards us. I hoped she'd slow to a walk, but she didn't and I held Ned to make sure he wouldn't spin. Thankfully he didn't and all was well :)
Lovely ride across some fields, we even had a little trot and 3 strides of canter!! :D My first canter out hacking for a good few weeks! He stopped when I asked and I was so proud :)
He tried to nap when we got back on the road, but I wouldn't have it and made him go the other, longer route. There was a tractor with a hedge cutter and he passed that with no trouble.
The wind was really howling by this point, but he behaved himself perfectly :D
He even trotted nicely up a really steep hill, which would have been a great spot for a gallop on another day! At the end of the road, he tried to nap again, so I made him go the other way, which I knew went onto quite a busy road. I was unsure if this was a good idea or not, but he's come so far with his napping, I just couldn't let him win!
Honestly, I can not fault him on that busy A road. Even though not too many cars slowed down and we even had lorries and buses whizzing past, he didn't spook once and kept walking boldly onwards :) Luckily we had quite a big verge most of the way, so were only on the road for a short while.
By this point, I was a little lost and unsure of how to get back, but eventually I found the way and it even took us very close to the show ground, where we shall be going next month :D
He even crossed the big, loud and scary weir without a second look! I did get off him before the weir and decided that since he had been so good as we were so close to home, I wouldn't bother getting back on and we walked in-hand from there.
I'm so proud of both of us! Me for actually getting on and going and I'm soo proud of him for being such a brave boy, with such high winds and so much traffic!!

Here's where we went...

Well done. I bet you feel so much better for it too - or have I just reminded you you were feeling ill?!

When I first had my boy, he went through a nappy phase so decided one day enough was enough and went out armed with a positive attitiude and a schooling whip in each hand and deliberately chose a route that would give him plenty of excuses to try to head for home. He must have sensed it as every time there was a turn for home we went past it with not even a second of hesitation and I've never had a problem since, well not out hacking anyway. Shows are an entirely different issue

Sounds fab! Hacks like that are definitely enough to cheer anyone up :)

Looks like you went miles - how many was it in the end?

Wow I'm sorry to change subject but my mare has the same fluorescent hat! I've never seen anyone else with one even though they're such a good idea! Congrats on the ride as well. Wish all of mine were that positive.

Congratulations, well done

By the way I like your style annagain :)

Thanks I'm very "stylish" out hacking and don't tolerate any nonsense. Unfortunately my "style" all but disappears the second I go to a competition. I want to do it, but I just get all "what if"

Great to read about your adventures with Ned :) I took Dolly's owner out for a confidence giving hack today as she's not been able to ride properly for a while due to her health which means Dolly's only been in the school for the last few weeks. Samuel was delighted to go out with his favourite hacking companion again and after initial nerves Dolly's mum began to relax and we both popped a few of the smaller XC Jumps. Weather was gorgeous when the wind dropped and both ponies enjoyed themselves hugely and Dolly's mum got a great confidence boost. Hacking = really great cheer up therapy :)

Wow sounds great! Ive been ill all day so barely done anything, could've done with a cheer up hack!
Aw, I hope you feel better soon! I'm feeling it again now XD just had a 2hr nap, so at least my headache has gone.

Oh yes, feeling it now! haha!
Ned knows when I'm really on it too :P if he thinks I'm not serious, he'll really mess about, but today he knew after the first time, so when I growled he trotted with an "Omg!" kind of expression :P

well done, sounds like a great ride!

Thank you! It was :D

They really are, I love hacking out with people, but solo hacks are sooo good for relaxing and getting away from everything :)

Not sure, exactly, but I think about 6 or 7 in total :)

Congratulations, well done

Hehe I don't really know anyone else with one, they're a fabulous invention :D Poor ol' Neds has broken slightly, I might have to treat him to one soon :P

Awww, it sounds like you two had a really nice day! :D

We did the same yesterday - I woke up feeling bleugh, but knowing I wouldn't be able to ride today or tomorrow, I *had* to get on him. Intended to take him out for some quick trotting intervals, 2hrs later we bimbled back onto the yard after a lovely long hack down a new-found track in glorious sunshine (and a VERY stiff breeze).

I'm still not quite sure how it happened, but it was nice sitting at my desk this morning thinking 'this time yesterday I was out on my horse, in the open countryside, with the sun on our faces and the wind in our hair...' well, he's hogged and I have a short haircut, but you know what I mean!
