Just a quick update on Molly and her 'abscess'.

Well, Molly had her last Bute on Monday morning. She remained sound throughout Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, so on Wednesday evening we decided to turn her out (after checking this was ok with the vet) into the little Shetland Paddock for 15 mins, thinking she'd be sensible.

Well she bucked, reared, and ran around like a loony for about 5 minutes until we could catch her again. Trotted her up and she was lame again.

So we took her into the vets today. Trotted her up and the lameness was there, but not as bad as it has been. Then lunged her in a small circle in the carpark and she was very obviously lame.
So the vet nerve blocked her foot, which significantly improved the lameness, but she wasnt sound. Vet still reckons it's her foot though.
So then we x-rayed her foot and this showed nothing.

Vet reckons possible soft tissue damage.

The shoe was removed and the vet has prescribed:

* Remedial shoeing - central balance shoes

* 2 weeks strict box rest, followed by 2 weeks boxrest along with 2 lots of 10 minute inhand walks (forward-going walks) daily.

* An injection of Cartrophen each week for 4 weeks (which we are going to be doing ourselves).

* No bute.

* Then reassess her.

If no improvement she's off to Leahurst for an MRI. At £1200 for the scan, we're sooooo glad she's insured!!! Vet did mention some companies wont pay out for these, or will only pay in part. Anyone have any experience?

So it's all pretty crappy really! She was SUCH a good girl though - the vet couldnt believe how sedate she was. Practically fell asleep during the xrays, and didnt react in any way to the several injections she had. Feel so sorry for her being stuck in her stable. Bought her lots of toys!

We really dont have much luck with horses!!!

Oh honey, I am really sorry to hear this...

Fingers crossed for soft tissue damage as that should improve slowly. Has there been an improvement since she first went lame?

Totally just PMed you exactly as you posted that! Think Molly and Grace have been up to the same things!

Yep, one day she's really rather lame and the next day you can hardly see it. Then she'll get lamer, then stay like that for a few days, then get better, then lamer, etc etc!!

RE: your MRI - a LOT of ins co's are really not good at paying up for these so I'd check with your ins co pdq!

Yep, phoned them before. All they could say was that they cant guarantee anything over the phone, but that they HAVE paid out for them before. Once we know whether or not she's going to need one, we'll bombard them!

I'm proper stressed because we're all going over to Cyprus for a family wedding on the 17th of October for 2 weeks, so if she's not sound after this 4 weeks, she's going to be on boxrest while we're away.

It may work out good timing you never know! If not - why don't you send her to an equine clinic whilst you're away - this will ensure she gets the best attention whilst you're off on holiday! I did this for H when I went on honeymoon and it was a huge weight off my mind... not that expensive either!

Ooooh, there's a thought! Wonder if the insurance will pay for hydrotherapy?! When Murph had the laminitis, we sent him to a hydro spa for 2 lots of 2 weeks. For one of the 2 weeks, we were on holiday. It's such a wonderful place and worked wonders for that particular bout of lami. Wonder if it could help Moll?!

Oh gawd Lou, only just read post as cant get on bloomin forum. You havnt had much luck recently hun. Instead of going to Cyprus and getting bored with all that awful sunshine, why not come to rainy South Wales, bring the ponio's too and that way you can keep your eye on her

Petplan will pay out for MRI on a vet's referral. NFU will pay 50%.

I didn't have any problems claiming on my Petplan insurance for MRI.

Fingers firmly crossed for you! Fiddler had an MRI scan 2 months ago and our insurance company would only pay for half of it - apparently this is pretty normal. He also had cartrophen - only two injections though as it turns out that what we thought we were treating actually isnt the cause of the problem - llloooonnnggg story

But i did the two injections and as long as horse doesnt mind injections it very very easy to do - though there is a lot of cartrophen to inject! if we had used cartrophen for the full amount of time though it would have been one week for 4 weeks, then 1 a fortnight for a month and then 1 a month for 2 months.

Really hope Molly improves
