What is the best alternative to straw for foaling down? Can't use straw, mare + allergy + no straw on vets advice. So what instead of my usual shavings?

I'm thinking some easibed to make solid banks and hemcore over the top/in the middle plus I'll have rubber matting in most of the box...

I use paper. Works well with foaling boxes (although I now use it for all my stables - with rubber matting.) Rots down well on the muck heap. Can be a bit messy around the yard on a windy day - but we just empty dirty water buckets over the top of the muck in the barrow to avoid it blowing away.

Becki used something else as she couldn't use straw for Hannah, PM her, but I *think* it was NedzBedz

Could be wrong though.

As I said on SA, please be careful when choosing your bedding, as to the size of the shreads, or whatever they are called. IMO Aubiose and Easibed and the like are too small. Bedmax or similar are lovely BIG flakes of shavings, as a pose to sawdust size shreads! I've foaled mares on this very successfully. Also agree that paper would be workth considering. I may be using paper for B when she foals, as I am determined to recycle some of the paper that we chuck out in the office at work........

i used paper this year as the straw was not very good. it worked really well. i did a lot of research this seemed the safest alternative but it needs to be the proper animal bedding one as some inks are poionous and to some an irritant
