I have recently noticed my cob has had a rather disgusting snotty nose, when I say recently I actually mean quite a while, not sure how long though. Sometimes when he 'sighs' you can hear it clog up, he's constantly blowing his nose and you find huge revolting piled of snot everywhere.
He has had strangled when he was 2/3 so his previous owner told us and it infected several other horses which it killed,
Could this still be a sign and should I be worried? Anything you need to know more of to help just ask x
Thanks very much xx

i would call the vet if youve got big piles of snot everywhere - may not be strangles but could be a sinus or respiratory infection which can be nasty.

Thanks, they're about thumb sized blobs, appear about once a week maybe more as he's turned out, may just call the vet and see what she thinks x

Get the vet out, my sister's horse had a sniffle at new year and the vet came out to see him twice with antibiotics which cleared it up within a week - yard has now been quarantined with strangles for a month and a half (we don't know if he brought it, or if it's just because the horses were all in so much over christmas/new year that one that was carrying it has been passing it round!)

If the snot is yellow or green it is probably infected and he should have antibiotics. Is he out all the time or does he come in at night? If he stabled at all or fed dry hay it might be an allergy causing it perhaps with a secondary infection. Try soaking all his hay and feed it off the floor and dampen any feed keeping dust free as possible and see if that helps. Presumably he is eating and is bright and otherwise OK?

I've just had the vet out myself for a similar problem with my horse - a couple of times over the last few weeks there was a snotty discharge outside his stable in the morning but otherwise no other sign of a problem and then fine ridden on Sunday but by Tuesday developed quite a cough and became very snotty. Vet prescribed antibiotics and ventipulmin and now 5 days later almost completely clear.

If he had this for a while it's obviously not getting better on it's own then perhaps it's time to call the vet? Hope he is Ok.

A horse fighting off strangles may not produce the "Birds instant custard" snot. If the bacteria is still just irritating the gutteral pouch lining you will get ordinary snot. None the less it is there. Get a swab done . Relatively cheap and a damn sight more effective than a blood test. I lay a lot of our strangles problems at the door of the veterinary profession, who seem loathe to actualy test for it when the test might actualy help. Its a bit late when you know it is in the yard.
