has the wide and slow rule been completely abolished?! i swear i could have kicked some of the cars that past me and fox today, at least if they had been going slow enough! some cars didnt even slow down at all!

honestly, one guy in a van nearly caused a head on collision in his haste to pass us, absolute idiot  so proud of fox for being such a star and striding on seemingly oblivious!

apart from that i had a lovely day with my boy and he was so well behaved :)

Yes it's a dream to have a horse like that. I didn't know what I had with M. He was fab in traffic. A van wing mirror once clipped my stirrup iron and I shouted blue murder at the the driver (couldn't hear me obviously) and he just trundled on as if nothing happened while I seethed and waited for my blood to stop boiling!

It's getting ridiculous some drivers especially trade drivers.

Useful having well mannered horses in traffic. To be honest I don't think I'd want to take something that wasn't well mannered in traffic out on the roads these days as people do seem to act like nutjobs

Just as well my lad doesn't mind what they do. Just don't drive into him, that's my only rule

The ones that make me chuckle are the ones that slow down but are such bad drivers that they get level with you then rev their engine to pull away

I find a schooling whip held out at 90degress makes the pass a bit wider ;)

I had the delightful experience of a car overtaking us and as he pulled out to give a little space, a cyclist came through the gap between horse and car. Wish I'd been carrying a schooling whip as it would have caught him even without holding it at 90 degrees.

Luckily horse didn't flinch.

Worst thing is you can't even report cyclists as without a number plate there is nothing to identify them.

some drivers just have no common sense at all. I was out hacking with my 9yr old daughter yesterday and we had people tucking right in behind her pony as in that he could have dented their bumpers should he have chosen, coming past fast within a foot of her stirrup, trying to squeeze past on narrow country roads, revving up as they draw level and some not even bothering to slow down at all. You dont need to be horsey to know that surely thats not sensible to do near a large unpredictable animal just in case. Thankfully daughters pony is about bombproof as you can get or we wouldnt be out hacking.

then again there are some very considerate drivers...

Glad Fox was well behaved :D

Was thinking exactly the same in the tractor earlier.

Had two cars overtake on a blind bend, one forced traffic to stop and the other overtook in a turn right lane coming towards us, which forced those cars to pull back in and turn off the main road instead... ironically it was a beema driver who gave us plenty of room and waited for us to get off the road.
We were on the road for less than a mile between farms and were doing 27mph in a 30mph... god knows what was so important!

Recently i bought a pink tabbard with 'young horse in training ' on the back and i wear this on top of my yellow hi viz coat and i have noticed that drivers are much better(generally) at slowing down than when i just wear the yellow jacket on its own. Even cars approaching from the front seem better so obv pink seems to trigger a 'slow down' message into drivers heads.

I'm thinking of getting this pic on a t shirt with the slogan: this is what happens to cars that try to sqeeze past us at speed... that said Deano has never turned a hair at traffic before or since thank goodness.

haha met one of those on my way out, she amost came to a halt despite me waving her to come forward, id rather that though than zooming by at 90mph.. i never really carry a whip on fox tbh! i might start just for that purpose though!

Just like this idiot? See them too regularly and this is just in my car http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kX9ZjFve3Vs

this is exactly what happened! only fox and me were in the place of your car haha  was so scary!

i agree some cyclists are a nightmare. a group passed me today though and were lovely, shouted to let me know they were coming and asked if the horse would be okay :)

jeezoooo! didnt realise that was the damage haha! you should, or post a picture of it all over the place so people will know to slow down!

Glad to hear fox was calm and cool, so many idiots about only a few weeks ago a BMW X5 flew past us and sprayed stones all up Tess, in the poor girls face and my legs, she did nothing, tap danced a bit but the idiots got the middle finger

Out of interest what did Deano do to the car ? Bet the driver thought twice about doing it again:cool:

its just downright ignorant! people seem to just assume that because the horse is on the road it means they wont jump at a car. fox is scared of drains, even on the road he takes a wide step round them. if he'd been doing that when the idiot zoomed by us i think id be writing a very different thread tonight!

Ah another one who thinks Drains are filled of horse eating monsters

My two old boys were both great in traffic but I am so glad I don't live in Scotland now as we have a lot of youngsters.

I had some scarey moments, including the man who tried to overtake into a blind bend and in braking, to avoid a head on with an HGV, almost killed one of my horses. What annoyed me most, when I lived on the edge of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, were the cyclists with bikes strapped to cars, who were amongst the most appalling - these the very group who curse motorists for dangerous driving!! They are no different.

Tessy bear he booted it as it tried to squeeze past us at speed in the narrow bit of the road outside weesoph's yard, despite my frantic waves to slow. I wave out of habit more than anything as I have never known him to kick at anything else before or since but I guess he got pissed when she ignored his mum! She wasnt pleased.

haha yup! drains and puddles seem to be where all the horse eaters lurk

You have described Tess right there :D

Oooft glad he came out ok, idiots now days it's her own fault for not slowing down there is no excuse in order to pass your test you learn about slowing down for horses

glad im not alone haha! and i agree about that being part of a driving test, although i dont think boy racers would care much after theyd passed!

Think it's to keep us on our toes :)

Oh i know sadly, hence why i carry a schooling whip and hold it out, as an extension of both rider and horse usually people slow down especially on the narrow lanes near us

Both of ours are thankfully pretty solid in traffic, although my mare will take exception to odd flowers, some wheelie bins, gratings etc. The very odd thing is that people will give sisters horse, who is a rather large staid draft horse, loads of room, but skim past my considerably lighter and flightier mare.

Tell me about your car cam? Why do you have it and has it come in useful?

I've only had it less than a month but I've seen plenty of videos on youtube how it could be useful, and I have had an unfortunate incident where I had hit a pedestrian but I couldn't prove that he had come out from behind a parked car on a dark street as the guy had decided to claim 5 weeks later  so if anything happens like that again this might help as an extra pair of eyes. Got it here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prestigio-R...7O7Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362387065&sr=8-1 Had to buy a separate windscreen adaptor as the one it came with didn't stick but the camera itself is really good. Works at night too.

Thats a good price, does it record onto a memory card? I'm not very technical!

To be fair most are very good but every Sunday they seem to do some sort of race or timed ride so there are huge numbers around and it only takes a tiny percentage of idiots to cause problems.

It's a very horsey area and I wish I could find out where the cyclists came from so I could ask the organisers to pass on advice on how to behave around horses.

Yep just stick a memory card in. I set the camera to record up to every 15 mins, and a 16gb SDCH memory card will hold up to about three days worth depends on length and number of journeys.
