So i wrote a post on here about a week ago about my dog coughing.

today was the first time i got to bring him to the vet as i am at the mercy of others due to a fall with my horse.

So the vet was great with eddie and spent about 5 minutes listening to his heart.

then he heard his cough which was also lucky.

so his diagnosis is he has a level 2 heart murmur, they go up to 6 so that is not so bad, he is not sure what is the cause of his cough but he said his trach is very swollen and has put him onto steriods and antibiotics and wants to see him in a week to see whats the story.

My poor boy he said the cough is nothing to do with his heart but he will try this and see what happens.
 
I have a Patterdale ( 16 yrs) and he has a grade III heart murmour and honestly it sounds like a washing machine! He coughs due to a trachea injury when a puppy, but its never exercise related, more irritation from a collar etc.
Dogs who cough due to heart complaints are usually in a bad way heart wise.

I also have another terrier who twice a year has terrible cough/throat problems, always miffed various vets, but it coinsides with moulting, I think he takes back hair then he gets terrible pharyngitis, we do the steriod/antibiotic combo with him, but the BEST thing ever and we found by an accident was when he was acutely sore with a pelvis injury and he went on Metacam, it totally cured his cough within 2 days! Now we get the old Metacam out when he starts to get irritated, certainly worth telling your vet this story, as my vets are now using it on all larynx/pharanyx issues.

Definitely worth mentioning the Metacam. I know vets can be ar$y, but I keep telling my vet stuff and he's never once been funny about it. I taught him about sarcoids (I'm talking canine vet here!) and he seemed quite happy to learn something new.

I tend to roll up to the vet with suggestions: I know my dogs best and while he's the professional, I can definitely tell him what the dogs are like.
 
i have to admit when i went in there i did say i thought it was his heart or some sort of asthma.

he seemed ok and did go straight to the heart for a very long listen.

most people who meet me tend to think im a little crackers anyway :p
 
Tis feesable as you do get coughs with hearts, infact its unusual for dogs to get coughs, its usually something wrong, they don't really get colds like we do!

And your vet might have already discovered Metacam is good for throat irritation, we only descovered if by chance with Scraps, but its fab!! XX
 
I've been unlucky enough to have had three bouts of kennel cough hit my six working(?!) dogs over the last year or so. All dogs are fine bar Ruby Springer who coughed with some regularity. Hubby is a homeopath and gave her a dose of "something" (I'll find out what it was) and ....lo and behold... a week or two later and I havent heard her cough! I'm very sceptical about homeopathic treatment but it appears to have worked!
 
i just hope the meds kick in. he is an old man and he looks at me bless him with big brown eyes.

maybe this is a reality check that he is not going to live forever :mad:

i would like to know of anything that could help him. although he does not have kennel cough
