to check a new calf; poor little thing, he is by the hedge but still looks wet and miserable. He was only born this evening, do you think he will be OK? I am used to calves but this weather is exceptionally awful. There's little chance I could get him back to the yard in the dark as he's the wrong end of a ten acre field. I tried to put some straw over him but he got up so I have backed off and left him. I think the Mother is sheltering him a bit. Oh dear animals/weather sigh..

Thanks for your reply :-) He is the cow-sharers calf not mine; I did text them earlier to ask if he would be OK but they didnt seem worried. It's SO wet out there though and the field is laying wet now :-(

Oh heck you poor thing! I've been lying awake due to this heavy rain too as I only put rain sheets on the horses and one of them is out there neighing to come in. He really feels the cold. He is too spooky to bring in in the dark. What a worry for you. At least we brought in the mare and foal. Would have brought in the rest if I had known it would be this bad. As you are in Bucks, the weather should be passed over you very soon!

Hi yes I am in Bucks are you? Glad to hear its due to pass over. My horses hate the rain too, one especially is a wuss so I got them in tonight. Hope yours are OK. Glad you got the foal in, mine got quite ill as a foal because I left him out in the rain in August!

Was out working in the rain this morning, thankfully called off due to the weather though! Hope the calf is ok, it was really stinking down out there, the hire car did some nice aquaplaning

Poor little thing! How is your calf?

Been watching the weather getting steadily worse all night
hope my two have the sense to go in, shouldn't think so, can't wait to get home to check

Horses are really strange. My two love their field shelter when there i haylage in it, but are always to be found right out in the open in the pouring rain. They don't seem to think of going inside. If they happen to be inside when the rain starts though, they will not come out until it stops.

Thanks for the replies; I was quite worried last night. The calf was fine this morning, the cow had moved him quite a way across the field and he was snoozing in the sun! Raining again now though and the weekend is meant to be shockingly bad..
