I took a video of my boy free schooling this afternoon, after my physio had told me that he looked wrong on the left rein while lungeing. I agreed but thought well, he's only just come out of his stable, the circle was rather tight.

He's always been difficult to get going and has had numerous issues: kissing spines which have been sorted, suspensory desmitis with fasciotomy which was very successful; slight arthritic changes in his neck a year ago which was medicated; - suspensories scanned last year, fine..

Physio linked with vet practice has told me numerous times he is sound but in the past couple of years I've found him hard to get going. Again I've always been told he was sound and this was just probably behavioural.

So on work up the other day I was told it might be his hocks. He's coming up 13.

I've never got anywhere really with this boy but I love him, he's such a lovely guy.

So I took a video of him free schooling today. I thought 'not much wrong there' - and went away happy.

But.. just compared it to one 3 years ago again free schooling, and he was phenomenal. His paces were huge. I wonder if he has deteriorated over time and I've just not realised the extent. I've just ended up in tears thinking 'is he in pain and has been for ages?) .

Could it be that he's just getting older? Has it been his hocks all along and I've just not noticed? Should I go through the whole nerve blocking etc? Should I retire him?

My question I suppose is: Is it unrealistic to expect him to be the same as he was 3 years ago?

I am rambling totally, and sounding like a complete nitwit, but I'm in an irrational state and tearful after seeing the old video.

No, if he is 12 coming up 13 then I don't think it is unreasonable to expect him to be able to move as he did 3 years ago. As he is also less willing to work, I would arrange for a performance type workup at the vet hospital (after checking saddle and shoeing).

Do you not think he's a bit too old to go through all this again? He's been a proper sick note a few years ago and has undergone a couple of pretty intrusive operations :(
