Soooo 16 yr old Connie pony has been experiencing some footiness and slight front feet soreness issues which have come and gone over last few weeks. Sound on a surface, uncomfortable on hard. Both vet and farrier said not lami (obvious pulse, no blood in white line, no sensitivity to soles) but I am convinced it is and have been treating as such for last two weeks and through experience I highly suspect it is cushings - he doesn't have any other symptoms other than fat pads /crestiness but neither did my mare and he is a prime candidate for it. Vet didn't mention cushings and I stupidly didn't at the time but speaking to a v experienced friend who dealt with cushings a lot she also said she would lay money that it was cushings.

In a flash of stupidity I have given him 1 tablet of Peascend tonight from a stock I had from my mare thinking I just wanted to help him as soon as I could but am now panicking that I now can't get vet out to take his bloods for ACTH as they will be affected and that I actually might have done some damage. Help - what is best course of action now? How long will the pergolide take to come out of his system so I can get him tested? Or shall I carry on with low dose as likely to be inevitable he will need it anyway, fess up to vet and get him tested whilst on a low dose? Will taking pergolide affect him if it isn't cushings?

Please don't shout at me, I know I shouldn't have self prescribed but was just wanting to help him following some logical(but obviously not scientific!) thinking!

Bless you those symptoms are the same as my mares who did indeed have cushings. I think it takes 3/4 days to leave the system, but if you fess up the vet should be able to tell you. I think if you're going to test it would be best to not have the prascend in the system.

as prascend is given daily I wouldn't think 1 tablet will do any harm and I would phone the vet, ask to have his bloods tested but also mention you have given him 1 tablet and leave it to the vet to decide when to come out to take bloods. your gut instinct is probably right as we know our horses and can tell if things aren't right. when I called the vet to test my mare for cushings she said I will take bloods as you have requested it but she doesn't look like she has it. she did and her levels were at 172!!!!!so I was proved right, unfortunately....

Don't worry, phone the vet and book them for a blood test this time next week - it will be well clear by then :) (its unlikely 1 tablet, taken once, will do anything anyway) :)
