Does anyone use this? It's been recommended to me by a baileys feed expert. As I need a chaff suitable for my cushings girl with out alfalfa

The closest stockist is quite a drive away so don't want to go if she won't like it

I've fed just chop before and he ate it - but not with as much enthusiasm as other chops I've tried.

My cob can't have alfalfa or soya- it's a nightmare!

I feed him grass chop - usually whatever is in the feed merchants, but I really liked halleys grass as meadow blend so lower sugar.

He also gets grass nuts, and the dodson and Horrell safe and sound whilst not alfalfa free, is low enough in alfalfa that he doesn't react to it.

Bailey's high fibre complete are also alfalfa and soy free last time I checked.

We've been in a similar situation with my share horse - trying to rule out different allergies which we think were causing a skin problem (we've now identified it as sugar). We put him on readigrass, which meant my boy also went onto it as they share chaff.

They both eat it fine although my share horse seems to enjoy it more than mine. Share horse will gobble it down with fast fibre and his new sugar free food, mine will pick at it with fast fibre and cool mix and it's always gone by the morning, but he'll eat it straight away with sugar beet. He's never been a big eater and obviously needs the sweetness to encourage him. Luckily the one we really need it for eats everything anyway.

Can you contact some of the feed companies and ask if they can send you some samples?

I used to use ossichaff for my Cushing's pony, the sugar free one. Its chopped oat straw and hay. She loved it. Luckily she can have hay again now so don't use it anymore.

I love the Halley's grass chops and blocks for my sugar sensitive and ROA horse. None of my local shops stocked any plain unmolassed chaff, but you can order Halley's directly from the manufacturer online. I used to put together an order with all my fellow liveries to get enough to make it worthwhile. I became a bit of a salesperson for them and lots of my fellow liveries were persuaded to try them and started using the hay blocks as treats or stable toys. Was a bit of a hassle arranging it all, collecting the money afterwards etc but worth it to get them for my boy at a reasonable price.

Thank you, I assumed that readigrass would be similar to baileys ultra grass, which they do not recommend for horses that are prone to laminitis, which is why they've suggested to not feed it to a horse that has cushings! I will check out some more local feed stores to see if I can find another alternative, as I don't fancy an hours round trip if its not going to be that enjoyable for her!

she currently has fast fibre but drops a lot of it (got to love the 30 yr old teeth), so want the chop to make it easier for her to keep in her mouth!

I use it for mine as I'm sure Alfalfa makes him itchy and I don't like feeding molasses if I can avoid it.
I wouldn't say he loves it but equally he doesn't leave it.
There are a few old fashioned chops/chaffs about, Just chop and Ossi-chaff plain are the ones I have used as they were the ones available but you need to do your research! They also tend to be a lot cheaper than the fancy commercial chops too!
