Just fell off Jumping

I was jumping my young horse only been jumping last 3 months really and he had started getting a bit deep and bless him took off and went over with the front but not behind and twisted his back end and came down on the pole.

I hit the deck

all ok got back on and jumped a few more times he was a little spooked but ok, still chipping in any ideas? would a placing pole be a good idea? (not sure on distance.)
 
Owch poor you hope you're ok! Personally I think with young horses it's important to let them work it out for themselves - yes you can help him along with poles BUT I think if you make it the right distance with placing poles every time, he will never learn to think for himself. I would personally just keep going and he'll soon work him out - he may be a little under confident which is why hes chipping in so with the more confidence he gains the better he'll jump. Gridwork is also great but how old is he? As don't like doing it with v young horses.
 
He is 5 and recently went on a 3 day jumping camp and was foot perfect every time the first day was grid work the second day X-C and the final day a course. He was goiing in a little green and I have just started putting the fence up it was 2ft 9 probably only jumped that in the grid work before. Think I should have had the fence put up a bit more gradually (sp) for him too.

Well I think at that age just don't make things too serious - just have some fun and you'll know how much he can take - he'll tell you if he thinks hes going too fast. Good luck would love to hear about his progress x
 
have you tried loose jumping? has really helped belle progress, gain confidence and she has a lot of fun... and she has to work things out for herself too instead of me trying to make it all perfect. have been trying to get in the habit of glueing myself to the saddle and letting her learn.

It all takes time and persistance, but we will all get there someday!!
