Bex7 has finally got round to sorting out her ppr work for Bert. Farmkey informed her she was luck because they were just about to re allocate the mark. This would mean that there would be at least 2 horses with the same mark at some stage. It has only been a year since they would have sent out the reminders for the yearly membership fee. I wonder how many dups are out there. For some reason I always thought they were unique, silly me.

I too thought that they were unique, although i suppose thats a bit silly thinking that

Very interesting! thanks.

But do Farmkey and freezemark use 4 letters, could they both then in theory have a 16hand Bay Gelding marked with the same number?

Is there anyway of telling if it is a freezmark or Farmkey mark?

I have spoken to Freezemark. They state catagorically that they would never reissue a mark UNLESS the horse to which the mark was originally attached is known to have died (sometimes owners like to keep a mark). there has obviously been some confusion here, but both Freezemarking companies state catagorically they do not do duplicates

usually Freezemark do 3 digit markers, and Farmkey do 4 digit markers.

There is an outside possibility of this happening, but the chances of this are remote, particularly if two identical horses were to be involved. I think it is more likely with a mark the owner selects, as there appears to be a limited pool of horse's names

I am glad to hear that, I was obviously mis informed this morning when I spoke to them to renew.

After informing them that the subscription had expired and that I had not changed it into my name she had to check it had not been reissued to someone else. Then came back and said that it was still available and not been reissued and that I could simply renew it..........

Strange, maybe simply to put people off missing the renewal deadlines.

Maybe she meant that the number/horse had not been registered to another owner in the meantime..ie; a kind of third party between you and whoever owned your horse when it was marked.

Of course that is always possible.

She did however say "Luckily it is still available" and then asked me if it was still visible or did it need redoing.

At least we are all clear that there are not 10 horses walking around with the same number

Thanks for clearing it up.

Someone out there has the same freezemark as Stinker - I originally wanted LBH1 (Little Bear's Horse) for him and BBH1 for Cairo (Big Bear's Horse). Was told I had to have LBP1 as LBH1 was taken.

Think the poor woman got confused when doing them as I had said I did want LBH1 but that LBP1 was what I had to have and did him with LBH1.

Freezemark changed the papers and assured me that the other LBH1 could not be mistaken for him as a totally different animal.
