Me and OH are watching H&C TV and watching about a horse with Laminitis. He just came out with Laminitis is caused by too much grass. So I asked him how do you know when a horse has it, and he replied its lame. I ask what part of the horse does it affect and he said its feet... the inside swell up don't they?

I was so impressed!! He is actually learning watching H&C TV!! I told him what happens with the foot etc, but was still impressed with what he has learnt so far!! :D

Wow!! Wish my OH would take that much interest he knows what the saddle is and what the grooming brushes are and his headcoller and bridle are his "hats" lol He has a normal hat(headcoller) and a riding hat(bridle)

Although my husband is horsey (big-time!) AND rides, he likes to give parts of the horse names which are that of humans....

Examples

Fetlock - ankles
Forelock - Fringe and forehead
Hocks - Backward knees

You get the idea.....!

He is of course, sensible when it comes to 'proper horsemanship'..... ;)

lol Ginger_Nut. You obviously have a cheeky one :)

Very impressive Libby. I'm trying to persuade mine to come to the yard and help with my new youngster (namely, he holds the highland). He is wary of them so I told him to just think of her as an overgrown dog. hmm, don't think he'll watch any horsey channels though. How'd you manage that one?

Haha backward knees that made me laugh!

My OH rides robbie sometimes and he looks so funny trying to get him to trot...robbie only does things if you ask him in a way he likes..hehe

He is quite interested, he has helped bath groom and assist with plaiting up for Dressage once before. He is very good at bathing horses... Horlicks is not a small horse by any means, so for a non horsey person to take the reins (pardon the pun) and take the lead, was quite refreshing!!
He actually got my Sky so I could have the H&C channel!!
I think if I really asked him to, he would learn day-to-day care (turn out, groom, rug up etc). The only thing he DOESN'T do is muck out... although he has helped get manure for his mum!!

I heard a stonker on animal planet t'other day- 2 shetlands with horrendous turned up feet, the voiceover guy sez "They have severe laminitis, an infection which causes the feet to grow constantly"

LMAO.....

wow...where do u find one of these creatures? i get ignored when i talk about horses, only get to watch h&c when he is not in/busy, do occasionally get to watch sj if nothing else on, he has never seen my horses, only knows ones name and has been on the yard once - and he sat in the car playing on his fone while i ran down the field.
i am amazed these other types exist. oh has the same glazed look as my dad had wen i was wee wen it comes to horses

Hehe, not really related, but I had a great one from a friend of mine when we drove past a horse who had been clipped.

"Oooh, look, a horse with two textures"

Made me laugh

Hmm, also unrelated, but I took my very non-horsey mum to the field on Sunday to meet Tara. As we were leaving, and the horses were all at the gate, mum waved going "Bye horsies.... can they see me?"!!!!

My horsey OH (has been riding 2 years and had his own horse for a year) calls stables cells. 'Are they going in their cells tonight?' is a frequently asked question!

My OH is great - horsey (had to be really. I bought him a horse as an engagement pressie - never asked if he wanted one!!LOL) He calls the hocks knees too (doesn't even say backwards!). He's a great groom when I event - he's a mechanic, so can get studs in quick as lightening... I don't know how people cope with non horsey OHs. It was an absolute deal breaker for me!

Haha, this made me laugh! I think mine would think they were cells too - they are very much a 'live-out and love-it' pack!

My OH had never touched a horse before he met me and was completely terriffied. Still is (3yrs on!). But he did go through a stage of riding lessons and only did 2. I think he wanted the first one (to make me shut up) and because he wasnt instantly Mark Todd hated it. This is a flaw of dating a natural sportsman - if he isnt amazing instantly he wont even give it a go. The second one was just to test how bad he was the first time. So my dreams of us hacking out together and romantically poo picking were shattered. That said, he is very understanding. He will turn up to all shows (even if its only for a few mins) and give me a kiss and do the OHey thing. He will put jumps up for me and may even groom a bit. The best thing is that he will ignore the money spend (from his account!) on them and will never tell me I'm spending too much time with them

How can you train them to WANT to ride though??!?

Hi Studentvet, my OH wanted to ride after he got fed up with walking/cycling with me out on hacks. We went through the whole stage of 'poo picking romantically' but we are now at the stage where he knows far more about horses and how to handle them than I do!

hahahah! I'm also very proud of my boyfriend, he didnt have a clue about horses when we got together, but after a bit training he knows the basics!! Hes been looking after my boy lately (along with friends) since i cant move around very well at the moment. I also force him to watch H&C at his house XD

just asked my OH - for interests sake what is laminitis? Hes totally non horsey
OH - something to do with horses?
ME - yeah
OH - an infected cut or something?
ME - well, no, but never mnd, just thought i'd try you
OH- what is it? (me=surprised hes interested!)
ME - *I explain in brief terms
OH - ouch, that sounds painful, poor horses - do they die from it?
ME - Sadly some do
OH - Laminitis is common in ponies but not so much in horses right?
ME - Generally yes, but there are always exceptions to the rules - how did you know that?
OH - I just do
ME - * clever so and so!! lol

Iam quite surprised he actually showed some interest - it doesn't happen often, maybe something is in the air? Brownie point for my OH!!!
