Put Gyp in the carriage and he was going fine round the field at home so took him up the road to the stubble fields. Mum was on the ground to do the xroad and my friend was with me in the carriage. He was going fine in the fields, trotting around and then he napped badly towards the entrance. I could not get him to turn and the bloody thing bolted. Some how he managed to miss the ditch that is either side of the field entrance, I think my right wheel bounced over the ditch. He was galloping across the next field, mother had seen/heard what was happening and closed the field gate.
He was heading straight for the hedge on the other side of the field, I couldn't pull him up, nothing can stop him once he is going, and I couldn't turn him. I was trying to get him to go left. We hit the hedge and somehow he turned the carriage right, my right wheel was in the air as we left the hedge and I could see us going over so I somehow shifted myself right, bringing the wheel back down again but now we are heading for the gate way. He goes to the right of the gate and hits a wooden fence in front of the hedge, breaking the top rail. He then turns sharp right ready to go off again, I was shouting at mum to grap him as there was no way I would stop him if he goes again, he spins in a circle and stops in front of mum. All of this must of only been about 20 secs, he covered the field so fast and from hitting the hedge to stopping at mum must of only been seconds.
Quick check of everything shows no broken bones or damage to anyone or the carriage so we unhitch and lead Gyp home, wheeling the carriage. Back at the field I long rein him, he was fine so put him to again and he was fine, no problems at all. Stupid horse why do they have to argue!
He has a couple of nicks on his chest from his collasion with the hedge and I suspect his chest will swell at bit from the rail, but no real danage thank god.
I however am still in a bit of shock and in need of a large brandy. My friend was fine a bit shaken as it was her first time in the carriage but wasn't put off.

Phew! Sounds awful - think you are quite lucky this time!
Silly ponio.

Rocky did that with me on friday - but not in a carraige. Was napping and bolted across 25acre field flat out before falling over and depositing us both on the ground! Scary stuff - even scarier in a carraige *shudder*

Gosh, how terrifying, probably even worse for your Mum!

Old boy (and I mean geriatric) just had similar problem but in our narrow Devon lanes, pony feeling VERY well took off for home and the old boy fell off the back into the road, landed on his head, not that it seemed to bother him. I think it was only about the second time he had been out since last years accident, when a local wouldn't reverse back for him, old boy backed horse and trap into gateway (how did he do that!?) driver THEN decided to back up and disappeared away, pony gets really fed up waiting, tanks off, catches a rock, and turns trap and himself over, and old boy in road again. I do think he is indestructable, because I reckon he must be coming up for his 745th birthday AT LEAST!

Been there and done that. Pony was fine, I got injured, immediately drove pony again and he seemed fine. Few days later hubby drives him, same thing happens. Pony has now been retired from driving. Please be careful, I don't know what made my pony bolt, but if yours does it again, think VERY carefully about continuing to drive him.

That said, I'm glad there were no bad injuries.

Sounds scarey, do be as careful as you can, I have all ways been taught to bail out with a driving bolt, suppose it is better to be in a 2 wheeler when thar happens. Goodluck. Haz

If Gyp has a tendency to bolt off under saddle it is nothing short of asking for trouble putting him in a carriage. For everyones safety I would not do so again.
