Just had a thought - equiami/pessoa

I have a Pessoa but was considering buying an Equiami after reading TD's recent thread. However have just looked at Kirstyhen's pics and it suddenly struck me - surely it would be quite easy to modify the Pessoa into a pseudo Equiami?

Are the front and rear sections competely separate? If so then removing the bit of rope that goes directly from the bit to the section round the bum should work. It would then need shortening a bit but that's easy - might even get away without cutting it. Any reason it shouldn't work?

As a reward for anyone with an answer here a comedy vid of the moment this morning that Fugly realised there was a strap round his bum..... He settled down after about 10mins. Short memory as he was worked in one quite a lot in the spring!

(yes.... arena is a pond... pessoa too loose... no boots.... lunger useless as laughing too hard to be effectice... blah blah blah :p).

OK, on further consideration... idea number two...
The equiami's a continuous loop I think? In which case I need to take the top rear strap off the Pessoa and maybe put my draw-rein loop onto the girth? Then run the long rope from the bum strap, through the roller, through the bit ring and down to the girth, then attach it through a ring to the equivalent rope coming from the other side?

Hahahahahahaha! That is hilarious, it's his front legs that really cracked me up, they just keep going!

The EquiAmi is two sections of rope, the back bit doesn't clip directly onto the roller, it loops through to give that bit of play. Then another section of rope clips onto that loop, through the bit, to the girth, back through the other side of the bit and connects to the otherwise.

But it would work the same if it were all one bit of rope? I'm off out to have a try - will take pics!

(There's a couple of really camp squeals in the vid which you can't really hear on youtube. Big girl's blouse! :p)

You horse abuser you :p

Will be interested to hear how you get on as I can find many second hand pessoas but no equi amis at all!

Not that the latter is hugely expensive mind you but I'm a skin flint

I had been going to ask in the light of the other thread - what is the exact difference in how they fix or are connected to what and what different actions do they have?

I use a borrowed pessoa at present and don't understand the difference.

I think so - love the drawing. The difference is then that on the pessoa there is a bit under the tail which goes up the side of the horse to the top of the roller but not on the EA....or have I got that wrong....

OK, so I've done an experiment tonight. Have only dressed the horse up in each one to try to figure it out, haven't actually worked it in either.

Pessoa as I use it, though not actually adjusted for this horse (he was just the handiest model!):

Then I ran the long piece of rope through the roller rings to the bit and back to the girth on each side, and detached the top loop of the Pessoa bum strap. The design flaw at the moment is that the bum strap is too heavy (I believe it's just a cord on the Equiami) and drops down below the hocks if it gets half a chance. I could modify this by replacing the sheepskin/padded bit with the spare cord that I took off earlier.

It had started to rain (again!) by this point so the horse wanted to leg it back to its box but you can get the general idea:

Comments? Especially welcome from those with an Equiami...

I thought exactly the same thing as you after reading that thread and have now formulated an equi-ami style thing from my pessoa too!!

You could take the 2nd pic and add back the bit of rope from the bum to the top of the roller so that it stops the back strap falling too low?

When I use my pessoa I do it like the 2nd picture, go thru mid height rings to bit and back to between the legs, always thought that was an option and stopped me worrying about the side strap dropping too low.

Yes, I think that adding the 'hanger' strap back in will achieve this. Then, mechanically, I can't see that it's much different from an Equiami? It's just got something to keep the bum strap in the right place.

That took me longer to figure out what you'd done than was really necessary!

Will have to check out kirstyhens thread but looks good to me.
So its the draw rein method but also encouraging working from behind?

I think now the difference is that it's not a continuous loop like the equiami, so it clips to the girth rather than continuing back up through to the other side. It's that loop that they work within and learn to balance by themselves rather than finding a point to lean on in the rope. Also because the back and front piece are one piece of rope in yours you have no room to adjust one piece or the other.

Much easier to buy the equiami ;) even for a tightwad scot/yorkshire lass ;) :p

I splashed out bought the economy equi-ami, used it 4 1st time 2nite & wow its worth the spend!!
Been using a JW pessoa for last wk & horse no-likey but equi-ami & he's a happy (long & low) horsey!
So I'd say just splash out & forget the DIY!!

I think you partly misunderstand me. I'm not necessarily trying to make a DIY version to save money, just understand how the two devices differ, how they work in relation to each other and where the fixed/moving parts of each are so that I can figure out the different effects they both have on the horse.

I don't like spending money on something that I don't fully understand!

Can't tell you why but I think it's because it does not sock him in the gob but my 5 year old goes fab in a equiami right from the first five mins of having it on but with a passoa he curls right up.

No idea why both were fitted correctly anyhow bought the equiami and for all it costs id not try to turn one into the other for me anyway the way my horse reacted shows there is defo a difference between them.

Highly recommend the equiami

Another difference I'm sure I've heard someone say is that you can ride using an Equi-Ami (you have to make some adjustments from the lunging version), but you can't ride using a Pessoa - I've not paid much attention to either so I don't know if this is correct?

Well, you would be better off just getting an Equi Ami. There are no fixed parts on the Equi Ami and you can't really replicate this by fiddling with a Pessoa.

I may well do eventually. However I like to fully understand something before I part with a sizeable amount of money, and I have to be satisfied that it is going to be an improvement on my current set up as it's not an insubstantial outlay. Hence trying to understand the mechanics of how the two different concepts work. Lots of people would just hand over their credit card but I'm scientifically trained so prefer a more logic-based approach than 'everyone else has got one so it must be brilliant'. As it happens I'm interested enough, from information on this thread, from the manufacturers and from my own experiments to put it on my list of 'wants'. :)

Don't you think that it has been a worthwhile discussion? Several people have stepped up to say that they don't totally understand the difference, it's not just me!

I am far from scientifically trained or minded unlike my clever brother, I got the literature side of the family brain!

And am still struggling a bit but many thanks Gamebird for your examples. On the Pessoa I use, the long side piece fixes back to the roller on a pivot like clip before then going to the mouth. I then very between using the rein to come back to the roller or go under the chest like side reins, or like Vienna reins which I have previously used.

Still be interested in more discussion!

I may be being a bit blonde (and haven't had a look at the vids on YT) but I can't understand how it is in a loop as it looks like there are seperate pieces that attach to fixed pieces..

I'm possibly interested for when buds comes home as he doesn't like the pessoa and tucks behind it and although I've used the draw rein method he's at the stage of his education where he could do with something a bit more.

Confused from Berkshire ;)
