Just heard on the news

it's only the fluffy yummy mummy's whose little darlings haven't seen a pile of cow [****] let alone stood in it that need to worry.

the rest of us normal human beings should just carry on as normal

In the case of this Ecoli strain I can understand the reaction. You want to protect your children after all.
But instead of wrapping the little darlings in cotton wool, maybe its time our kids were taught the value of proper hygiene. Its not rocket science.....if your child touches an animal, you get the child to wash his/her hands, or better still use a hand sanitizer!

I think its more of a lesson of don't lick the animals and wash your hands. If/when I have kids they will be allowed to get filthy, play with animals and run around. Never did me any harm, if anything, it did me good

What a load of twaddle - they would be better off teaching them to wash their hands properly. That and allowing them to get dirty - if they built up their natural resistance to more bacteria they would stand a better chance of fighting these things instead of suppressing their immune response by the over use of disinfectants.

what's the point of a petting zoo if they can't pet?

How many farming children wash their hands after touching the animals for goodness sake! If maybe the little darlings were allowed to get a bit mucky a bit more often then their immune systems may be able to cope better. BTW 'Hand sanitizers' are not as effective as washing your hands with soap and water.

There have been a few posts on this earlier, we're farmers, we have three kids. All of whom have never had a sick day in their life (apart from the odd cold or tummy bug going round at school). Tonight for instance, all three were in the parlour helping me scrape up after milking, being kids they had sh*t everywhere

The problem with children in general today, is they are too clean, and therefore never get a chance to build up a resistance to bugs, therefore when they do get exposed to germs, they can become very ill

. Telling parents to not let their children touch animals is just ridiculous, how on earth are they meant to build up any resistance against everyday things?

I think the obsession with hand washing/sanitising after touching anything is very unsavoury. My child has managed to live for 4 whole years without contracting anything life threatening, he does not wash obsessively, and is at liberty to touch all manner of horrors including farm animals. Not sure if he licks them.

He does lick windows, but that's hereditary.

personally I think its a complete joke....sure they didnt mind back in the old days...you cant do this you cant do that...mad cow this salmonela that....i mean seriously....what is this world coming too?
Never did me any harm as a child going to petting farm to see the animals...its a good fun way for children to learn about our animals etc....

Foster daughter used to lick any animal that licked her
grin.gif
The only health problem she had which was animal related, was 'cat scratch flu' which was early on in her stay with us, before she was used to the animals and had rather a nasty run in with a scared cat!

Anyone else ever been halfway through a home-made sandwich and realised they hadn't washed their hands, having just returned from shampooing the dog with a skin infection/poo picking/emptying poo buckets/dunging out dog's ears etc etc etc

I was the same as a kid. Absolutely disgusting.

However I do not want to make light of what is obviously a very serious situation for those with very ill children.

i eat up yard or whatever and sometimes forget to wash my hands...it really doesnt bother me in slightest....whats a bit of germs aye??...thats why us older ones are fine...well i say fine....lol

Totally agree HH sorry CC. I have been a minger my whole life lol, and hardly ever get ill. I will not have antibacterial spray's in the house. The only special treatment is in the kitchen. I know those darn cats get up while I'm not watching so I wipe the tops down with a cheap Milton type copy. I don't want cat crap in my lunch lol, but that's about it.

If you are referring to tootlers, well that's just sensible. It is something like 70% bacteria after all!

Wee on the other hand actually comes out sterile. It's only the stuff that has been hanging around that is manky. That's why hand cleaning stations and door handles in public places are such a health hazard!

You know what's scary though is my friends little sister has become lady Mcbeth after they were "taught" about bacteria 2 years ago at school. She freaks out, like proper breakdown freak out, if you do anything and don't wash your hands immediately. He hands are chapped, sore and red because of the amount she washes them... she's 7.

Bloody ridiculous. Why should the majority be stopped just because of a few people complaining?

Every petting farm etc I have ever seen has hand washing stations, signs to use it, signs to do this, do that and do the other, what more can they do? If the attending adult doesn't take advantage of that then that is their look out.

You can't stop the numpty adults who don't supervise children though, of course the goats are going to knock your little darling to the floor if he goes in a pen waving food!

So...does this mean that visitors to my home can't stroke the dogs, cats, goats, horses, lambs or whatever else I have here?

gah

IMHO I believe that as long as it is your s***e & you are not preparing food for others it is ok. !!!!! LOL I am told by a stoma nurse that although she may wear gloves when attending to a patients "bowel" bag. The patient does not have any need to do the same. Reason being it is their faeces therefore the patient will not have adverse effects to it's content. Uurghhhhhh

Totally with you there HS, my daughter has never had a day off ill either. I used to work in a microbiology lab, and we tested early samples of anti-bacterially treated cloths. My boss reckoned that if they got popular it'd lead to huge outbreaks of disease later on where people had no natual immunity

As a biologist I think this is utterly rediculous too.
Exposure to bacteria builds immunity, especially in the young.
Whats that saying about eating a peck of dirt in a lifetime.

My sister is hysterical about cleanliness and washes everything down with bleach , floors, toilets etc every day. She has four kids, one has asthma and eczema, another suffers with Attention Deficiency Disorder, ones ok and other has tantrums. My sister also has eczema. The whole family are always ill wiith gastro-intestinal infections, my sister especially suffering every time one of the kids get something.

They were not allowed a dog because of possible contact with dog faeces, so have no idea about the responsibilities of pet ownership which of course later transfers to child care skills.

She did buy them pet snakes, but I think that was because she didn't know you could get salmonella from reptile faeces!

My mum is a microbiologist, and one of the most unhygenic (but very professional in her job!) people you will meet!

These parents are causing their own problems.

I recently spent a lot of time visiting a hospital and I hate that alchol stuff, it gets ingrained in your skin and then everything smells and tastes foul. On the plus side I didn't get MRSA.

mad old world we live in these days!

my old mum used to say i hadnt had fun unless i was covered in dirt!

i spent most of my childhood wallowing in mud and muck, falling in ditches and ponds or sleeping in the dog basket and it never did me any harm!
even these days im still quite happy to share my beer or ice cream with the dog when were out and about!

cheers

My OH and I couldn't believe that when I heard it yesterday. When my son was 4, he started coming down the stables with me, he's 8 now but still plays in the dirt (well, literally rolls around in it with the dog), helps me poo pick, plays on the MUCK HEAP, plays with the chickens comeplete with chicken poo.
He's never been off school for catching anything from the animals only from catching stuff going around the schools.

We pick apples off the trees and eat our sandwiches with our mucked up hands- the girl who shares the pony at my field also brough some chocolate cream cake a few weeks ago and we tore that apart with our hands (LOL, no cutlery available) and we've never gotten sick from it!
