is chocolate to dogs?

Dandy has just managed to find a mint aero ball under the sofa - OH dropped the bag and we thought we'd found them all - and ate it before I could grab it.

Well my piggy greyhound ate a whole box of thorntons chocolates a couple of Christmas's ago.

I think as long as it isnt dark chocolate it isnt too bad.

My gran always used to give her dog a little bit of chocolte when she had a mars bars - dog lived until she was 15 years old.

My mums Cavalier King charles ate an entire 6 pack of jumbo mars bars and her dog and my King charles knocked a massive tin of quality street off the sofa, the lid popped off and when mum got home all that was left was wrappers and the little buggers have lived to tell the tale

Over a year ago Bumble Dog stole two maltesers - fitted within 6 hours - we are not sure if related but as you can imagine chocs are kept well away from her - pleased to say she is soldiering on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My old dog stole my huge toblerone & hate the bl**dy lot. Well not the lot left 2 triangles but she made sure that she had mouthed them so that I couldnt have any!! She wasn't ill or anything where as I would of felt sick as a anything. Family thought it hillarious & kept sayinng that she was stopping me from getting a migraine but I would of never eaten that amount. She as stolen that much over the years & never suffered not that I freely offer it to her.
Sorry haven't managed to answer your question really.

My old doggie, Sorrel, in her lifetime (that I remember) consumed:

6 choclate filled advent calendars.
1 easter egg.
1 WHOLE box full of cadbury chocolates.
1 mars bar.
3 small boxes of chocolate shells.

She was the sneakiest, tricksiest hound that ever lived. And live she did! To the ripe old age of 17.

I know someone whose Boston Terrier had a major fit after eating a bowl of Hershey's Kisses. I also know another BT owner whose dog worked their way through a chocolate fondant and was completely fine.

I err on the side of caution and keep all chocolate locked away in the cupboard.

chocolate is toxic to dogs... however one or two aero bubbles are ok as the cocoa isnt too high as its milk choc.. dont let them go near the dark choc tho as it can be v dangerous.
you can buy chocolate for dogs now... kinda tastes like that tacky stuff you come across now and again (not that i tried it or anything...)

Think I'm right in saying it depends on the chocolate, the dog and luck. My dog ate ALL the chocolate from under the christmas tree one year, carefully opening every parcel and discarding stuff like bubble bath, and had no ill effects, but I do know someone who's dog ate one large bar and was very ill.

Apparently, acording to my vet, although all chococlate is poisonous to dogs, dark chocolate is far more damaging than milk.
Troy got into a cupboard i had a box of chocolates in, and eat the lot (except the cocoanut ones) i rang my vet for advice and the first thing he asked was if it was dark or milk! i thought he was being funny until he told me about dark being quite nasty.

I believe that its chocolate fed over long periods thats poisonous rather than the odd piece. The toxic levels build up in the dogs system and will eventually be fatal if its fed over a continous period.

QR to all

thank you so much every one. I've been off fo rthe week end and was quite surprised to see all these replies.

you'll be pleased to hear that Dandy survived his Aero mint ball with no unpleasant side effects.

Thanks for the info on the different types of chocolate I had no idea that dark choc was worse than milk.

one piece is just as dangerous as lots of small pieces if it's dark chocolate and a fair amount of it.

the higher the percentage of cocoa in the chocolate, the worse it is for the dog. white chocolate is pretty harmless, 80% cocoa dark chocolate is lethal - one square can be enough to kill a very small dog.

personally i dont mess with it - if someone rings me up and says their dog has scoffed chocolate then if it's within 2hours i get it in and make it sick, then give it charcoal tablets to absorb the rest. If it's longer than 2 hours, then charcoal tablets and close monitoring, possibly a drip if starts showing any signs of absorbing the toxins. Yesterday I had a Cavalier in who'd eaten a big 100g bar of dark chocolate - 5mins later he was throwing it all back up again with no risk that he'll get sick now and no chance of the toxins damaging his insides so that he suffers in the future.
