What do you think of Monty Roberts, Kelly Marks, Heather Simpson etc? I know there a lot of mixed feelings about Parelli on here and just wondered about other natural horsemanship people...
I value Monty Roberts methods above Parelli but as some of it has things I don't really see the point of or agree with. I like his join up method and do use it on new horses I get. I dont know much of Kelly Marks, but she was taught by Monty so assume she's the same as him? Never heard of Heather Simpson??
I think the whole idea of taking the horses natural behaviour into account when training horses and indeed keeping horses, is a very good one!
However I think Monty Roberts has now an 'ego' problem! I have been to see his demos and I was impressed but I think its hard to apply all his methods to all horses.
I think monty is very natural with horses and has some techniques that are useful but also some i wouldn't use. By what i've seen from someone he trained it also seems that his methods are sometimes incorrectly used and therefore can cause more harm than good. As for Kelly i saw her fail to load a horse at a demo and monty had to take over so from that little experience i wasn't overly impressed. I know very little about Heather.
I've lost a lot of respect for Monty these days, I know he's getting on in years but I've heard many people come away disappointed because of his selection methods...and I'm not talking about disgruntled owners!!
I've never warmed to Kelly, she always seemed too preachy and...well, hippie-ish!!
However, I have been fortunate enough to have a demo and discussion with Richard Maxwell...who was keen to explain his methods and point out the need for a huge amount of practicality!! As someone already said, it's not always practical to use Natural Horsemanship...Richard Maxwell acknowledges it...He's not exactly been the nicest Horseman in the past, he'll honestly admit his mistakes, he'll openly admit he's struck a horse who was going for him to protect himself...I think many can relate.
He doesn't preach, he just shows what he does, explains why and lets you figure out if it's worth it!
I've been to a Monty and Kelly demo, and thought it was good, although their techniques work for them but i can't imagine trying them myself! they seem complicated and could do more harm than good if done incorrectly - which would be likely if done by someone who just watched the demo.
I agree with Judziah - i've seen Richard Maxwell demos about 3 times now, and his techniques are easy to understand and mostly seem common sense - he just puts it in a simple way. My friend practically worships him and has had him up to see her pony twice. I would love to get him to work with Morris - no doubt he'd sort his rearing in no time, but i think the £400 plus petrol (which will be a lot since he'll be coming to Scotland) is slightly more than i'd like to spend! He might be a last resort tho. When i win the lottery...
