Had vet to pony yesterday and fears were confirmed that he has sweet itch (9 years old and only just started?!?). So off to buy a fly rug. At the moment he is not affected that badly so thought that I would stick to a normal fly rug as oppose to a full body one (you know, the ones that go over the face and under the stomach, the lot) but need advice. Which ones do you like and dislike. Haven't had fly rugs before as pony only out for a couple of hours a day and not normally that many flys about so I am completely in the dark about what to buy. Also if not brands what should I look for in a fly sheet, what makes a fly sheet good. Oh, and also, should it have a neck on it (i'm guessing yes, but as i say I have no idea).

BTW I've just realised my just quickly... went down the drain a few minutes of reading ago, so very sorry, but please help

If he defo has sweet itch, ordinary fly rugs will be pretty much a waste of time. He will need one that is specifically for sweet itch. If you look at many of the ordinary fly rugs you can buy, they are beautiful and snowy white but how well do they protect the horse from being bitten???? I get bitten through my jods! So how can a bit of flimsy, pretty white fabric stop the horse being bitten??? I've just bought my ned a fabulous Rambo fly rug (can't remember the full name of it) which is quite light but has a sort of chain mail composition and - more importantly - it is impregnated with an insecticide. It wasn't cheap but it is beautifully made and the insecticide will last for 25 washes. So far, my ned is as happy as a pig in clover, no flies anywhere near him, fits like a glove, totally field safe. I'm hunting for a contact for Rambo rugs to let them know what a brilliant product it is!
 
Saw an elderley pony at a show today with full mane and tail.... he had sweetitch!! They keep it at bay with Benzobenoate (sp). Said they had no trouble getting hold of it either (I thought it was banned)!!

Might be worth a try

merlinsQuest - I've been trying to get hold of some coz this is what everyone is telling me to get but I can't seem to find it anywhere so perhaps it has been banned!?!
