I am so mad needed to let off some steam I have just found out that a friend of mine has packed her very quirky / dangerous horse off to a dealers. The poor horse has alot of behavioral problems before my friend bought him he had had 7 homes in a year now she has had him for 3 years 2 of those years he was in work and to be fair to her she did her best by him although he put her in hospital serveral times. He will not let you touch his legs and freaks out if he even thinks you might go near them he is similar when ridden its had to put it in words but he is dangerous and while my friend was prepared to put up with him others wont. the thing that bother me is she decided he was too much for her and wanted to sell him our instructor suggested putting him down as he has so many problems to which I agreed as to any one is he dangerous. I think to pass him on to a dealer is irresponsible as not letting them now exactly what his issues are. The horse in question is quite a nice lokking animal and is about 15hh so perfect size for a teenager it worries me to think he could be sold on to someone and him do some serious damage to them. my friend was lucky that there was always someone around when she had her incidents with him I am so mad because I thought she had his and other people best interests at heart. sorry to go on but its really upset me and I am worried about this horse and what he may do

All i know is she couldnt catch him one night so she rang the dealer and they picked him up the next day I dont think she was the dealer she bought him off was being sued as said horse dump someone on the road when they tried it and they ended up in hospital dont think any one in their right mind would take him on

You seem to think that selling to a dealer is a bad thing but I would disagree in general. Most of the dealers I have know or heard of have been really quite good horse men with know how. they want to pair people up with the right horse (otherwise they'll just bring it back or better sue!)

I think you're friend has financially done the right thing, she probably wouldn't get any money for the horse if it was PTS...meat money at a push but she'd have to take it to the knacker yard.

Personally it wouldn't be about money but the future of the horse. If it really was that difficult I'd have it put down (ie if my instructor thought it should be PTS) the other option would be give it to the ILPH who could find a non ridden home for it but again no cash option, actually I think you have to pay them.

it's very difficult, you may not agree with her but I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision.

I wont go in to massive details i dont think dealers are a bad thing but this horse has so many problems he is a full sedate to have his feet just rasped! and it still will lash out at anything near by what has upset me is she doesnt seem to have thought about the horse or who he might be passed onto and what damage could be done to horse or rider

If the horse is so dangerous then before selling it on she should have done the responsible thing and have had the horse freezemarked and micro-chipped so that it could always be identified in the future.

When she sold it on she should have made it quite clear to the purchaser how dangerous it was and put this in writing noting the horses freezemark and microchip number and asked them to sign it so that there was no doubt thay they where buying a horse that was very dangerous and that it's identity could be traced.

having bought - in full knowledge of their problems- several problem horses over the years, including 2 banned from all local shows as to dangerous to be in a public place!!
i would say many are a problem because they are just not in the right home, not necessarily a bad or an inexperienced home but just not right for the horse,

but i agree some are just plain dangerous, beyond retraining to a safe level.

i also had someone i know sell on a horse with problems (which they had caused) to a teenager, the kid had the sense to seek professional help and a spinal pain was found, fortunately the new pairing got on very well and the problem was manageable.

here's hoping your friends horse has gone to a good dealer who knows their stuff and won't end up as a doped auction disaster for some kid

If I had the time and knowledge to have given this horse what he needed then i would have done but i dont i already have two one which has many problems of his own in the behavioural sense, what has upset me is the lack of info that has been passed on about him i bought my problem boy knowing full well what he did but in this instance he could be passed on to someone who hasnt got a clue i hope he has gone to a dealer who will sell him to someone who is prepared to deal with his issues but i am not sure that is the case
