Hi all. After lurking around the forums, I decided to register and join the fun!

I have ridden most of my life, though had a break of about five years due to change in life circumstances, and have been riding again ( lessons 2-3 times a week) for a few months now and wondering how I ever did without it. Riding skills are returning, slowly.

I have had my own horses most of my life, have competed at low levels of dressage and show jumping, and hacked. Of course being re-bitten by the horse bug I am now shopping for a horse of my own. I realise it might take awhile to find the right one. But it is somewhat frustrating, as there does not seem to be much on the market in between green horses and competition horses in search of a new life that do not cost a fortune.

I am willing to look at anything that is plausible-- I used to get on anything and ride it, and was not bothered by green, but now I am wondering if that is the right way to go. The ground gets harder over the years. On the other hand, I do not want to have a horse that only has a few servicable years left and struggle with what to do with it in a few years time if it is no longer rideable. I would like to do some unaffiliated dressage and perhaps jumping, and if it is fun and goes well, perhaps try some affiliated shows.

The search for a horse is frustrating. I know it takes time and patience to find the right one-- but the good ones seem to vanish in a flash!

Try contacting rescue charities, or have you thought about an ex racer? If you get one from a charity that has been properly re schooled they make lovely allrounders

Welcome and totally agree try the Thoroughbred Rehabilitaion Centre TBs are wonderfull ,also HAPPA and there are lots of local rescues xxx good luck xxx

Welcome back to the world of horses OP!!!

A number of years ago I returned to riding after a break of 8 years: basically got withdrawal symptoms and had to get a fix ASAP.

Ehmm, without wishing to frighten you......... dunno how long you've not been around horses, BUT brace yourself for the inevitable price rises which would have occurred since....... i.e. the price of a set of shoes will have risen astronomically, feed, clothes, rugs etc.

Be prepared to be shocked!!!! But hey, we're all suckers, totally hooked.

So hope you get your dream horse sorted out ASAP........ and, er, when I "came back" to horses I said I'd just have the one horse, and that would be it. THEN..... little loan mare came along......... so brace yourself for the fact that one horse might not be enough :):):):)

I've been in the same situation as you OP, I have come back after a 10 year complete break due to pregnancy and children which followed on from another 10 years of dipping in and out due to my previous career in the Royal Navy. I have also found that the ground looks a lot harder than it used to! I have been back in the saddle since August. I recently took on a share horse who is lovely and a true school mistress, she is teaching me how to ride dressage with the fabulous support of the owner and the YO. I am planning to stay with this arrangement for another year - 18 months and then I am going to take the exciting step of owning my own. Like you, I can't believe I was out of it for so long - really, how did I cope!? Welcome back! X
