a few days ago the yard owner went out to check on the horses & found her very old border collie with half his face ripped open, her old dartmore hiding in his open stable & my welshie cowering in the dirt paddock (the two ponies have the wander of the yard & small dirt paddock) on closer inspection both ponies have puncture wounds (mine on his rump & hers on his neck) so it seems Dylan was trying to do a good guard dog job when he got hurt (he is no fighter bless him)

what gets me is due to the number of small animals (chickens ect) the yard has 6 ft fencing all around & fine very small gage wire so that nothing can get out or in (including the very young & cute chicks

) so this means either the dog that did all this damage jumped a 6ft fence or someone let it in.
either way someone must have seen or heard something, and someone must have let the dog out. why could they not just knock and make sure Dylan and the boys were ok (dilly may still loose his eye)
my boy is nervy & it is taking a lot of handling to get him around & this set him back again!! i am just so angry

police really were not that interested in looking into it.
sorry rant over!

Is the dog not usually good with horses?
Would it have been trying to herd them in fun, or aggressively?
Collies are very agile and can get over fencing.

Hope the ponies are ok, and the dog, poor thing.
Kids?

no dylan is fantastic with the horses & has always been loose in the yard with them, he comes out with us on rides & with the carriage.
another dog has got in and hurt him and the ponies (by the size of the bite marks it was huge!).

dilly has several huge bite marks on his body & face bless him and is now on antibiotics for infection but as infection is in & around eye socket he may loose it (poor old boy he is nearly 15 now) so is being loved and fussed by everyone at the moment. the ponys seem fine apart from being a little un-nerved around strange people.

i got myself a collie a week ago and she's trying to herd the mares, and learning to run, since the 16.2 tb will happily mangle her if she oversteps the mark

hope the dog is ok, and the horses settle down again soon ((hugs))

do you think a dog got in alone, or do you think some ar$e has come in and set dogs on the animals deliberately?

Not wishing to fuel speculation about big cats being loose in the British countryside but just how big were the bites and claw marks? Huge dogs wouldn't have the agility to get over a 6" fence (without bringing half of it down with them anyway!) whilst a big cat might

none of the hens/ducks/geese were touched just the 2 ponys and poor old Dilly & the vet said its more like a dog attack than fox or cat (i dont want to know the cats he's been dealing with!)

we do sort of wonder if someone let it in on purpose & that scares me.

Poor dog.
I misunderstood your initial post, sorry.
May be worth contacting your local paper in case their is an aggressive dog on the loose.

Just spoke with Aoibhin this morning, they are convinced it is a dog..... now a very battered dog as Aoibhins pony had blood and brown fur in his back hooves. From the sounds of it this little man really went to town on the attacker. Not bad for a 11.1hh section a that is usually scared of his own shadow.

Fingers crossed for Dilly

ok hang u say claw marks im sorry but a dog can scratch yes but on the shoulder i dont think they would be able to do that, oh and dogs imo usually go for back legs etc and big cats go for necks wither area, sounds more like big cat to me. can you post any pics if you have any?

I have seen a GSD jump a 6ft fence from a virtual stand still, and a dog could easily have left claw marks on the shoulder if it was aiming to bite up the neck.

I know my dog has given me nasty scratch wounds jumping up on me.

sorry if i have come across quite strong im sure a dog could jump the fence quite easily, i just meant imo it doesnt sound like a dog attack.

If there was more than one dog though pack mentality would play a lot in it as well. Dogs can cause much more injury than many people are truly aware of.

think it is just a big dog as the claw marks only scratched the skin but did not draw blood. only the teeth marks managed to punture the skin and they are not too bad on the boys.

Its Dilly that took the brunt of it all bless him.

Mind you we do live in the fens so you never know it could have been the fen tiger!!

A wolfhound type attcked a flock of our in lamb ewes a few months back. The injuries were horrendous, dont discount a large dog rather than a cat.
Hope the collie feels better soon, and the brave ponies are getting over their fright! x
