There have been some posts recently about horses In Holland and Germany not having much turnout, so thought I would post our lot who are now outside 24/7 and will be till October. They will then be in at night and out in sand paddoocks for most of the day unless it a howling gale.

It was not easy to find but it was worth the wait and the move;

Good on yer girl. Ours also have turnout out but unfortunately not 24/7. Ours are the lucky ones with owners that care. I know of stables and horse owners in Holland that think if they turn out their horse longer than 1 hour they'll get injured or fat!

Micra - beleive me it took ages to find somewhere that did not think that 45 mins on the horse walker was as good as turnout!

I ended up at a Western Stal we had somone turn up for livery recently that insisted on only turnout for 2 hours a day (horse did not like it) not with any other horse as he was a highly expensive dressage horse and had to be booted up to the hilt when out.

YO listened to all this then said "I dont think you will fit in here"....Priceless

Haha! I find this interesting as I got my boy from Holland as a ten year old. He had obviously been turned out before (he's not a precious dressage horse) but the first day i left him in the rain he got in such a state. I slowly had to introduce him to bad weather as he would get so upset and come in looking like he had just ran the grand-national. I came to the conclusion that maybe the dutch didnt turn out in winter? Having bought him in winter that made sense to me as the ground over there was so wet. My boy came from a farm type home (apparently) so surely they would have turned him out quite a bit?

Actually probably not lol.

My YO's are I consider sane and sensible (well far more than most!) but at the slightest sign of heavy rain in they all come. I got down last week to find them all in at 2pm as the satillite was prediciting heavy rain. Complete Madness but hey ho when in rome.

I am considered very odd as I ride and work my horse in the rain....my comment is well what am I supposed to do if I am in the woods with him and it starts to piss down call us both a taxi!

Odd people lovey but odd!

Oh, lol. I'm glad I did treat him with special care then when i got him. Bless, fancy that never having experienced rain before. Its strange how they must have been so precious about him being out in he rain but never once got his teeth checked in his ten years. A little odd i agree. Friend used to work for a showjumper who imported alot from holland. She was telling me all the stories about turning dutch horses out on hills to find that they couldnt work out to get down the hill. Lol! I must say we still strugle with hills a bit now. Also in holland they cant have cones along the road or white lines on the road cos they are the scariest thing going, far scarier than combine harvesters and tractors with 20ft trailers :)

LOL ok let me help you out here;

You horse will ever have been on a road in its life it will have been ridden on a Cycle Path running alongside the road, these normally have no markings and are brick. I bet he is great with Bicycles, joggers, and scooters isn't he lol

As for the hills (god I miss hills I used to ride in Cyprus so am used to mountains!) we have built our own, our YO has built a trail riding field with a Hill, a raised bridge, some raised stop platforms and a huge pond you can swim through. So ours get hills thank god as the ultimate plan is to move back to Scotland.

MY OH has actually just had a good idea re the rain......Whenever it rains here there is a hige risk of Thunder and Lightening as it is so flat anything sitcking up i.e a horse is liable to be the first thing hit also the fields have no trees so horsey is the first target.

Maybe they are not so crazy after all then lol

I have heard something about being ridden along the side of the road and when i tried him in holland we went on the grass verge. Would explain the fear of white lines then. Lol! And YES he is brilliant with joggers and bikes and the few scooters we have met. Infact when i first had him he was extremly nappy when hacking alone, spinning on a six-pence and darting for home (understandably). The way we got him braver out alone was to get him to follow OH either jogging or on a bike. Problem is now whenever we are out alone and we meet a walker or a bike he wants to follow the whole time :-)

Not sure how they kept my fatty thin (as he gets) without hills. Clever YO though building all that. Why did you move out to Holland anyway (sorry, just being nosey now)? Would like to take another trip out there sometime but worried I may come home with another horse. Lol!
