Just upset and angry.Today was riding in indoor school and another livery was exercising her horse there.I do understand the use of a schooling whip, but not for hitting constantly when poor horse do something wrong or/not pure enough/not quick enough. All what i could hear was the sharp sound of the whip and poor horse grinding his teeth! So glad i had i-pod,otherwise it will be to unbearable.Well,i suppose you can do all what you want with your horse:(Sad. What would you do in this situation?Tell her to stop? :(

I wouldn't say anything to her yourself but would have a quiet word with YO who should then make sure that s/he just happens to be passing when this rider is schooling.
The YO is responsible for the welfare of all the horses on the yard. Of course livery may decide to go somewhere else.

Agree with this. As a yard owner, I would want to know if anyone was doing this to their horse. I have found however, that I never have a problem with adult clients, but have had to step in with teenagers before.

Last time I went to a dressage comp with my lad, I was outside the warm up just sat waiting about and people watching as you do (wishing I could ride a well as some and admiring some of the lovely horses) saw this woman warming up a lovely horse with her schooling whip pointing in the other direction and every time the horse didn’t bend properly (or what ever she was asking it do to, although it looked beautifully schooled) she kept flicking it in the face when she thought people were not looking with the end of her dressage whip and calling it every name under the sun then loosing her temper and ragging it the mouth.

Now I’m no expert rider (in fact I’m in desperate need of lessons to be fair!) but if that’s how you achieve high scores and those are the sort of people I'm aiming to be on par with….well I'm not all that fussed thank you very much!

I would have a quiet word with the YO, definitely wouldn't say anything to the livery as it almost definitely won't go well!!

kenzo - was there no steward in the warm-up area?
If I'd been stewarding there, I'd have told her in no uncertain terms to pack it in.

Yes there is always a steward there but I've no idea if she noticed or not, the warm up was pretty quiet as it was later on in the day so I'm not sure if she may of been paying as much attention as perhaps she'd normally do, I made it clear I'd seen her (the lady on the horse) as I had to double take and then she didn't seem to do it again but it does make you wonder what they do at home if they dare to do things like that at a competition.

I'll see my RI tonight and ask her what to do,because she know everyone there and who is who. Shame, but sometimes its better to shut your mouth and just say nothing,or you will be in trouble yourself:(

She wasn't on a nice big grey mare was she? I know of someone who rides (I use that term loosely) in that sort of manner and it's mainly because (a) she cannot really ride and (b) she is scared of the horse! I know she's been out and about doing some dressage recently so it makes me wonder....!

I'll pm you.

OP, just playing devils advocate here but are you sure she was actually beating the horse? A long schooling whip can make a pretty nasty noise even when not used particularly hard, and it is difficult to get a lot of force behind one...... It can be quite justified to use one fairly frequently in some circumstances, say a tap behind the leg to get the hind stepping under on a circle......

I am not defending beating horses up but a dressage whip can be a useful training aid and is not necessarily a beating stick. In fact if I wanted to beat a horse up i wouldn't use a dressage whip!

I saw some other people using whips on their horses, but no one with that amount of force i must say!And other horses wasn't shooting forwards or bolting or bucking as a result.Tap with a whip is one,hit is another.Tap on the hind when doing piaffe ok i think, but hit for every tempy change?I dont know...Just to see this wonderful horse grinding his teeth while being worked...

Used incorrectly a dressage whip can inflict vicious injuries because it is thin so cuts easy, even though bendier than short stick. I remember buying my first schooling whip donkeys years ago at a very good riding stables that also had a tack shop. The seller made 100% certain I was aware how to & not use it for the very reason it could cut if used incorrectly.

OP have you not read the threads on "Snaffle mouthed rant" and "why do people use bits of tack on their horses....." Apparently you're not allowed to have an opinion - you are supposed to ignore what other people do to their horses and let them get on with whatever they want to do because it's their horse.

My reply was tongue in cheek....you are right to be upset - hitting a horse in the face is a terrible thing to do, with a whip or otherwise. Hopefully she will feel bad now that she knows you have seen her doing it and it may make her think twice about doing it in the future.

I also agree with the above. Too bad if she decides to move elsewhere, there is no need for that kind of behaviour - poor boy :(
