Last night I took my horse into the indoor school at the yard and stood him in the middle of the arena while I adjusted a couple of the ground poles I had laid out.

To keep him safe and avoid them slipping over his head… I tucked his reins under my stirrups (Still run up) well as he always does he started to wander off … but instead of just wandering aimlessly about he headed for the track and started doing circuits of the school… well after adjusting the poles I sat down on the mounting block at X in the school and just watched him…. Never once did he stop… never once did he look my way… just kept plodding round the track.

After 5/10mins of that I said STAND… he stood… I changed the rein and let him go again… same again…. On the other rein…

Now im not sure if he thought there was someone on him given there was a contact on his reins? But it did make me giggle especially when after about 15mins or so of walking on each rein he popped himself into trot and did it all in trot aswell…

Even more amusing is that he began to drop his head into the contact… (he wont work in an outline… my fault 10years of mainly happy hacking has done that) but he relaxed and worked very well for him….

so half an hour after i laid the poles out... i had a horse that had schooled himself... and other than me changing the rein and the occasional voice command we had filled our booked time slot in the school!

… Just wanted to share coz he made me giggle!

p.s. I loose school him occasionally… but normally have to encourage him to stay on the track and not just zoom off … so this was a bit different!

Pointless post really but just wanted to share!

Bless him how sweet. He's like ''no problems mum.. I know what to do''

Now all you have to do is get him to read his own dressage tests! lol

Lol - how cute, can he come & teach Barney? I try to loose school him but he still thinks there is a lunge line and will only go in circles round me. Agree you need to get him learning & doing his own dressage test. How funny would that be???

Ha that's well funny. I have done that too when I've needed to keep my horse still in the menage in order to jumps, and I've put the reins under the stirrups. The one time I put must have put the reins under the stirrups unevenly so the one rein was tighter than the other and my horse who won't stand still for 2 seconds without a haynet starting walking in very tight circles trying to get to the gate. It was hilarious, he wasn't getting anywhere, just getting very frustrated in the process!

Aww Bless... that must have been funny to watch!!

I did film some of it on my phone... will have to work out a way to download it... and will maybe next time take a video camera down with me incase he "self schools" again! :P

My specialist training technique to get your horse to self school is at charged at a rate of £50per hour... reduced as the horse starts to "self school" more... hehehe

Actually very sad that the horse can school it self, just shows the monotony of his schooling.

Everyone else seams to have understood the spirit in which this thread was intended... this wouldnt have been my "schooling" plan... it was just him!
