First off, I would just like to point out that everywhere is miles from me!

So a few weeks ago I realize that there are BHS clinics held weekly about an hours drive with the trailer away from me. I think great! A very good way to help keep my horse fit through the winter, an extra weekly lesson on top of the private one I already have. So I phone up about them and they tell me that they are currently running xc clinics but as of this wednesday they will be back to sj at the indoor school that I was interested in attending. So I pay for my BHS gold membership and phone up tonight to book my place only to be told that they have decided to move the lessons an extra 50 mins away! Great!!! Like I want to drive 2 hours for weekly lessons!

A less than impressed Frankie x

I would ring BHS tomorrow and explain you joined only to take advantage of the lesson situation, with them moving the goal posts you have no wish to be a member. For the cost of a phone call it must be worth a try.

But you should be a BHS member anyway!

Supporting the major horse charity that looks after your interests with the Government, road safety, bridlepaths, training standards, riding establishment inspections, etc. etc.

If every rider joined the BHS it would have more money to do all the things that riders want.

I would ask if they had any more people wanting the lessons in the previous place. If enough people asked perhaps they would put on extra lessons.

Tbh...like the CA, i often question why I support the BHS

nothing much seems to get done

or it may just pass me by...

I just wanted the insurance, couldnt care less what else they do

What else do they do?

That depends upon the Committee, and that is anyone who puts themselves forward for election and what the members ask for.
At every AGM our committee asks what members want and this is what happened -

a driving heavy horses day, a "test your test" dressage instruction, map reading/rights of way laws for access week, a showing masterclass (take horse be assessed, training and turnout tips), and cross country schooling clinic, also fashion show and quiz evening. Previous years had pleasure ride and trailer driving instruction and alternative health evening/demonstrations AND held Riding and Road Safety courses and tests, Horse Owners classes and exams. Also lots of liaison with County Council about bridlepaths.

It isn't a waste. OK you can't get to the lessons you wanted this autumn, but you have Public Liability Insurance that you can deduct from you horse insurance and mitigate the costs of BHS membership, you have access to information, training support, welfare support, a local county committee who , if approached, mught be encouraged to do something closer to you, events and trips. All this as well as supporting a a national organisation that works for all horses
