Went to an exmoor breeder literally just down the road from where i live. She showed her cutieee little foalies!! so pretty!! and a 2 year old filly and a 1 year old colt.
I was looking for a companion pony for my stressy mare when i take my gelding to shows next year and i am due to do a viewing with an appy 1 year old on friday but i dont know whether to cancel cos these exmoors seem ideal! such easy to keep and they are such lovely characters.
The only thing is, do i get the 2 year old filly and then have potential to breed and back it slightly earlier. or do i buy the colt which was so friendly even though has had virtually no handling, was nervous to begin with but by the end of us standing there for 15mins was up close being cheeky and letting us stroke it all over!! The filly wasn't handled either and she didn't bother coming up but her full sister was there and she was much more friendly. also the 1 year old is already about 12hh ish so will prob make 13hh plus where as the filly will prob make 12.2hh top.
they are both officially registered with the exmoor society.

hmmmm. maybe i can persuade my dad top buy both ;) my mum is already smitten!
 
I had to pick from the herd with the boy, altho I'd already fallen in love with him - he stuck his nose in the lab's face when lab was barking at him - but it was still sooooooooo hard to not have them all. what's a girl to do when her hubbie is with her :rolleyes: sm x
 
Go for the one that you 'clicked' with. :)

However I'd personally get the filly because I'm a mare person, you wont need to geld it, at 2 yrs old it's a bit safer than introducing a yearling to older horses and if it has a nasty accident and can't be ridden she could have a broodmare career.
 
My head is saying filly, my heart is saying colt. It's just so hard! Tho the filly was very pretty but I just fell in love with the cheek colt!
 
This doesnt answer your question but it REALLY p's me off when people breed and dont handle the foals! It seems lucky that the ones youve seen are friendly but no wonder so many horses have issues if they arent touched for 1/2 years or more! they probably havnt been wormed or had their feet done. Grrrrr!
 
He wasn't really cheeky. Just started coming up and licking and puzzling our hand and sort of nudging. So cute! Exactly like my 3 year old and I love it wen a horse has that attitude to life rather than being automatically wary and frightened. I am going see them both again next week. She's going to handle the fully so I can see them both walked and trotted.
They are worked but 1 yr old needs his feet doing. Didn't get close enough to the 2 yr old to have a look. They don't hav their vaccinations tho.
