My mare recently got mud fever and shes been in her stable for afew days now the vet gave her some anti biotics and some cream and it seems to be getting better :) but im just wondering.. They are in the winter pens now and its just full of water and mud thats obviously where she got it from! :rolleyes: but is there anything that can actually protect her from getting it again? i mean i cant stable her 24/7! and she has to be out but i dont want her getting this again. Is there anything that i can put on her which will be waterproof? it was on her heel. Any suggestions welcome as i dont want her to be getting it again, its a pain in the... :o
 
one of my horses recently got some sort of reoccurring bacterial infection on his legs. It may have been mud fever but the vet and I weren't too sure.

He ended up going on a course of antibiotics and his legs where sprayed with a horseware anti bacterial spray (in a purple bottle). This time they did clear up quite quickly. Sudocreme just made his legs worse but it could just be that he has sensitive skin.

I am considering in a set of these though, they may work, they may not but they are reasonably priced so I probably will try them.

Oh thats what i kinda hoped existed :D thank you i think im going to order some of these! gone down from 39.99 to 17! bargain ;)
 
Turnout chaps/boots are a total waste of money IME. Mud just goes up from the bottom. Barrier cream (I use Muddy Marvel) is much more effective.
 
Boots/wraps tend to make it so much more worse IMO.

I use Pigoil and Sulphur. You can get it already mixed from Ebay. Do a small patch test first to see if your Horse is allergic to it (some can react to the Sulphur, but the majority are ok) then use a paint brush to apply to the legs. Apply daily for a week, then every other day. Then just once a week. It is very important that you do not wash the legs though as it could break through the barrier. However using the oil will prevent mud sticking anyways. My mare comes in with a bit of mud, the next day it has completly dissapeared (slides of the legs!) Her legs look very clean and they are white.
