If you were out riding or walking, and you came across a dead farm animal, would you try to find someone to let them know, or would you leave it be? I've had a couple of instances where I've been in this position; one was when I went up for a walk where my old horse is buried, and there was dead bullock, all swollen and blown, in the field. In this instance we knew the land owners so went to tell them (I didnt think it looked very good to have fallen stock out in the fields; this bullock looked like he'd been dead a fair while, and a footpath runs right through the field!). Then yesterday, we were having a lovely ride when suddenly Ellie stopped dead, snorting and spinning round in panic. There was a dead sheep by the fence in the field.....I knew who it belonged to, but they dont really know me and I didnt want to be considered a busybody!

I know if it was my sheep, I would want to know immediately, but I didnt want to run the risk of being told it was none of my business, etc, etc. What would/have others done in this situation?

Yes, I usually tell the owner - if I know who they are. I have rescued sheep stuck on their backs a few times too - horsey not too pleased about being tied to a gate!

I would tell them, sudden death in farm animals can mean all sorts of nasties, not least anthrax!

This poor ewe looked like she may have died in labour

But yes, I see what you're saying; to have an otherwise healthy animal die so suddenly could be sinister. I guess I'm just wary - having been chased off someone's farm with a gun for this type of 'interfering' in the past - I'm more inclined to keep myself to myself these days!
