I sent off a claim for over £1000 in vet fees last Tuesday (13th) and received a cheque for the full amount (less excess) in the post this morning. Very impressed.

They were brilliant with me when i had over £7000 claims in 1 year for 2 different incidents. paid up on the nail everytime no question. Would not hestitate to recommend them to anyone.

They are excellent for paying out, can't fault them. When it comes to slapping on the exclusions, though - they always used to be very reasonable, but this seems to have changed. I can't imagine why their underwriters think my horse having ulcers means he is more likely to have issues with his teeth (as an example), but nevertheless they have lost my business this year because they are insisting on excluding his entire digestive system and colic as a result of the ulcer claim.

None of the other big companies want to do this - they are all more than happy just to exclude ulcers and anything related to them. Luckily AmTrust have come up trumps and managed to quote me an identical policy which is over £200 cheaper and which only excludes ulcers and related issues, oh yes, and their cover for tack is better (more cover financially) and only requires a locked door not an alarmed room.

Unfortunately I stopped insuring with them as I realised I was paying £700 a year to insure a young, healthy horse with its wind and half its legs excluded, despite the horse never having shown any signs of lameness, illness or infirmity in said areas and me never having claimed! (the exclusions arose from a past leg injury when with the breeders caused by a kick which had fully healed and never caused problems, a small comment on my vet's inspection for a totally different leg that said the horse was marginally different on a tight turn, probably due to a too small shoe, and a similar comment that as she had stangles as a foal, she had slightly loud breathing.

I wrote to them pointing this out and their answer was that I would have to get a five star vetting to say there were no problems. So I would have to pay £££ and have hassle just for the delight of giving them business. I don't think so!

And my mare had very mild colic this year - vet's bill was only £80 or so so I would'nt have claimed anyway, but I bet if I had told them, and was still insured, they would have exlcluded her digestive system and any colics!

Oh, and they continually mis-spelt her name Lightning as "Lightening" despite being asked in writing at least twice to change it.

I mean, seriously, what is the point in insuring a horse if half ot its excluded? Its not as if you get a discount in the premiums, or any peace of mind from paying out for insurance.
