How am I supposed to know if my new horse has EVER received veterinary treatment other than jabs/dentist? He was a racer, then a neglect case for 5 years, so I daresay he has - but I certainly don't know the specifics. I'm just paranoid about being refused claims in the future for withholding information on previous injuries etc,

Any suggestions?

^^^ this exactly, you are only expected to declare what you know about his history.
I'm insured with KBIS and they are very helpful so if in doubt give them a call to put your mind at ease :-)

I insured my ex-racer with them and only put in the treatments I knew she had whilst she was with me don't worry about the things you don't know just give as much information as you know :)

Even if (touch wood, hope never happens!) you're horse has some kind of injury and the vet reckons its a re-injury, it would be very hard for the insurance company to reject a claim and maintain that stance.

I used to work for an insurance company and we had a couple of times where it was likely the horse contracted an illness or injury before the policy, however, if you have a clean vet cert, nothing on your vet history that the insurers don't already know about, and it's impossible to get a previous history, there's not much you can do other than agree to pay the claim!

Elbie - thanks for your reply - What if I use the same vet practice as a previous owner? Would they be able to acces these records? You never know what someone might have withheld when they've sold you the horse after all.

You just have to tell the insurance company what YOU know about your horse's history. However, if it came to a claim they may ask for a full vet history and if something crops up they may ask you to obtain the vet history from the previous owner. But I think to get it you would have to ask the previous owner and they would have to give the vet's permission to release it.

The insurance company could ask your vet's for your history but they wouldn't be able to request the previous owner's without their permission as they are not the insurers client.

I had an ex racer insured with kbis. Didnt know his medical history. but they paid out no questions asked when he fractured his leg
