My mare has a high tape worm burden (again) I’ve got 2 x Strongid P wormers to treat with.

She is now in her winter grazing and turned out 24/7 currently with no option to move to another paddock.

Is it a good idea to keep her in for 24 hours once wormed? (I do have access to a stable) or does it make no difference if she’s wormed while out?

She is poo picked daily. One website says keep in, other says it makes no difference. Thanks.

Isn't it more about not building worm resistance so poo with wormer shouldn't be left on the field? Given your field is cleaned daily I shouldn't think that it would be dire to leave her out.

When I spoke to westgate earlier in the year about one whose counts kept coming back high, they advised to keep in for 24 hours and poo pick twice daily for the following 24 hours after that, if it’s any help

Thanks all.

I just found this on Westgates website about Tapeworm and it being more important to keep in. Although spoke to Poo Post who said it can be beneficial to keep in, but if not leave out and poo pick. She keeps having high tape burdens re occurring when testing, so maybe keeping her in for 24 hours will help.

I always keep in for 48hrs- amazing the amount of worms passed after 24hrs, especially if you are having issues.

I like to keep out, let them move around. I just think it helps their gut do what it needs to do. Always poo pick everyday though.

I keep in overnight and poo pick morning and night anyway.
My 20 year old mare has had repeated high worm counts for last few years even though I poo pick twice a day.
She has been on prascend since May as although tested negative for Cushings, had several symptoms, including skin issues on face, excess sweating and weepy eyes.
She is doing brilliantly on 1/2 tablet am/ pm and has had two clear worm counts ?

The other thing to consider is that some wormers have a detrimental effect on insects that are good for pasture like dung beetles.

I think it's Invermectin and Moxidectin that are toxic to them and you're ok with Strongid P but worth bearing in mind if you use something else next time.
