I have owned youngsters since foals (TBs) so never actually bought a 3/4 year old. I always keep them on high fibre and hay with vits. I do know of the disease but always thought it was associated with the big fast growing WBs.

I now have a GWB tipping 17hh at 4. Have owned her since a foal and she has always been on the slim side some people would say she is skinny.

Would really like some info. Does it always present as swelling in the hock or stifle? Are there behavioural problems associated to it? Does it sometimes appear like a sticky stifle? or even a wobbler?

Thank you.

Swelling and certainly lameness are usually present. Most cases show up on xrays but some dont - depends on the severity of the problem. Sticking stifle I would say is not necesarily related to OCD and is most probably because your youngster has grown so much upwards and her ligaments haven't caught up with her yet! If you are worried xrays and or scans, although costly, should put your mind at rest.

No I am not worried about it but just wanted to understand more about the condition. So as to recognise it early if it does occur.

There are so many different conditions that affect horses (especially untested fast growing youngsters).

Does it just affect younsters or can it occur in older horses too?

Thank you for your post.

Mine has it in her hind fetlocks. She was diagnosed last March, a couple of months before her 9th birthday, but its only very mild. She presented with swelling, and just not moving properly although only very slightly lame as I caught it early. I didn't know much about it, and was under the impression it occured in older horses.
