This has always been a pet hate of mine and Im sure Ive complained about this in the past. But EVERY single event I go to I see at least one dog wondering about with no owner even in sight! Im getting seriously sick of it. I think it's totally selfish TBH. My horses for example, do NOT see dogs regularily as we don't have any. Of course they see them at events and have got used to them, but on leads! When one walks right up to mine then of course he'll spook. Plus Im sick of having wondering dogs come and piss all over our trailer and walk round my horses legs who happen to have big pointy studs in their feet!!

I dont see why I should put up with this especially when the rules state in almost every schedule for these events that dogs must be kept on leads at all times.

hmmmm i think the worst thing i see at every event i go to is a horse galloping around with no owner in site, one came charging at me as i was about to enter the arena and im sure the owner took another bite of her hot dog before passing it to a friend and catching said horse!

Yep, I hope the owners of the puppy at Badminton where fined for that!

I hate that fact that people think their dogs are harmless. Yes great if your dog just mopes about quietly but they can still spook a horse very easily or get booted by one!

Never mind the dogs some people allow their horses to graze loose!
The idiots we were parked next to at Bovington were warned we had a stallion, yet at the end allowed their horse to wander round the lorry park unsupervised.
Silly me thought it had got loose and ran to the box to tell them, but no, they let it graze as a reward... Some reward if it came so close to the stallion and got bitten for it's pains.. I can only assume they thought stallions don't attack geldings, but having seen one open a gelding's side from shoulder to bum using his teeth like a razor, I know they can..
I do agree with the dog problem though, it annoys me too. I resent being barked at by the terriers who seem the worst breed of all. My daft retriever stays tied to the front of the box or inside the cab depending on the weather.
One of these days there will be a horrible accident caused by a loose dog and then they will all get banned from events, and all because of some selfish prat..

MM I agree, its my pet hate, as well. Dogs loose are so dangerous. My horse sees dogs on a regular basis as we hack on large open greens but recently she has been chased by dogs and she is now very weary of dogs.

Our dogs don't come to events as one barks at horses and the other doesn't like events.

Its simple, keep your dog on a lead or leave it at home

my friend was at a event had a do come running up to her on her horse and bit his cannon bone luckly it ripped his boot off, and his leg was ok but f*cking dogs like that should not be aloud at show !!!

I so agree, I really hate people letting their dogs wander, being a right pest, peeing on the goods at tack stalls, your car wheels, looking for fights, getting tangled with horses. Grrrr.

I am a dog lover, and have owned dogs most of my life, but I keep them under control.

this is such a pet hate of mine too, i have been chased numerous times around the xc course by loose dogs,
I have now started taking my own dog xc training with me to desentertise her to dogs running around next to her, just so it doesnt frighten the life out her her when they appear.

We were walking a XC course last month and a loose terrier followed us all the way round the course, I hope no one thought it was ours as we tried to get it off the neck of a lamb which had strayed onto the course from the next field, fortunately the lamb was a bit traumatised and we managed to get it back through the fence. Turned out it belonged to the organiser (not the owner of the sheep).

My collies are extremely obedient & both are completely stock-proof but I wouldn't dream of letting them off the lead at a horsey event!

Tbhh, I probably wouldn't take them to a horsey event in the first place, as whether we were competing or just watching, I want to concentrate solely on the horse & no matter how well-behaved, the dogs are still a distraction & need looking after etc.!

Well you lot are sensible, so where are these buggers who are guilty of letting their dogs wonder? There must be some on this forum....!!

I remember a well known trainer (who has trained British event team members apparently) who I had a XC session with. He let his nasty jack russell rush about while we were training YOUNG horses for christs sake! The dog would chase every horse as we went past, including mine. I slowed up because the stupid mutt was hiding behind the drop I was about to go off and the trainer shouted "just keep going, he'll move - your horse needs to get used to that sort of thing anyway!" UMMMMMM!!!!! I pulled up and told him to put his dog in the car. He then couldnt catch the thing.

At the weekend my daughter and pony had a horrible experience with a dog. This was on a bridlepath and not at an event though.
They were chased by a dog. Usually our pony Tia is great out hacking by naturally was very frightened by this. Alex managed to stop her eventually and was really shaken. What upset her the most was that the dog owners did nothing to try to call or catch the dog. When the dog eventually ran back to them, they just turned their backs on my daughter and walked off leaving Alex and Tia very shaken up. Poor Alex was so upset, partly because Tia had been so scared but mainly because of the attitude of the dog owners.
I am a dog lover but the attitude of these particular owners was appalling.

I hate this kind of thing, and think it also applies to when riding generally, on pickles first hack ever, he was chased by a dog, and then the dog attempted to bite him pickle reared (I stayed on!) then I got off to try and calm him, allthough dog owner just laughed saying how can such a big horse (17.1hh) be scared of such a little dog, ended up with pickle loose and had to call YO who came up with the quad bike to catch pickle! the owners never apologised they just walked off and left me, I was just lucky someone from another yard was out riding and her parents were walking with her.

When my daughter was at PC camp a few years ago the DC used to let her Jack Russell wander everywhere. It was quite old and couldn't hear too well and on more than one occasion nearly caused an accident. No-one said anything just because it was hers. I don't usually take a dog to events if my daughter is competing, but quite often take one if we are spectating. They are all very well socialised round horses and I would never dream of letting them off. Last year at Sansaw did let my old girl have a little drink in a pool as it was so hot, she turned it into a full blown wallow and we had to spend the rest of the day with a very smelly, stagnant water covered dog!

I was chased by a jump judges retreiver at Strathallan last year. We were crossing the finish line when the dog shot out from behind the jj's car, snapped it's extendable lead and prroceeded to rampage round the course! The commentator bawled at the JJ over the loudspeaker!

I wouldn't take my dogs to horse events as firstly, the Beast is terrified of cows nevermind horses and Tina just doesn't like busy atmospheres, although she does love game fairs.

God this is a pet hate of mine too.

Why don't the offending dog owners get it?

THE REST OF THE WORLD HAS A RIGHT NOT TO BE PESTERED BY YOUR DOG!!

I get sick to death of.......

"Oh he/she's just being friendly"

"He/she only wants to play"

"Oh he/she wouldn't hurt a fly"

Bull s**t, leave the bloody things at home!

I can never understand why people take dogs to events anyway.

They must hate it.

Yes, please if possible leave them at home!
Obvioulsy sometimes that isn't possible, but then at least be responsible and have them on a lead, in your lorry. Dogs seem to be some sort of must have 'accessory' along with your dubarry boots and pikeur beeches!.....

I have to agree.

I've seen loose dogs, horses grazing loose and all sorts.

However, my worst experience was at a local show that actually bans dogs. They have however an elderly one - eyed cat who was parading the warm up arena, got too close to my mare, who bucked and threw me off. All owing to a wandering cat.

And yes - Terriers are the yappiest things and sadly seem to be the normal horse box dogs...

Agreed, and can I add, if your dog 'isn't good' with other dogs then either don't take it or put a ****** muzzle on it - unlike the Staffie that attacked my friend's dog at Badminton just because they walked by it.

Mine love it! But I would never take them if competing unless I had someone else to look after them all day. They do, of course, stay on the lead all the time - I can just imagine a rescue lurcher & rescue greyhound loose at an event

The worst thing I ever had was going to a Lucinda Green xc clinic, her flipping terrier was loose for the whole time & my very spooky horse found him terrorfying! Naturally I opened my big gob and asked whose dog it was..... she didn't put it away though

We have a footpath which runs through the farm down one of the main access routes to the fields. When a bit younger my daughter was taking her horse back to the field and it was nearly attacked by a collie while the owner did very little in an attempt to get it under control.

My daughter asked her to get her dog under control and she then embarked on a 'youth of today' rant while her dog was still trying to attack the horse.

I so wish I had been there - I'd have given her the 'parents/horse owners/vets bill payers of today' rant back.
