I'm toying with the idea of buying a foal or yearling. I currently have two teenage geldings. Up until very recently, they lived with my mare, and there were never any shenanigans that I was aware of, though she was also older. Would it be a bad idea to get a filly - could I expect trouble? I have a vague notion that if the filly grew into something nice, it might be worth breeding from it at some point, which is obviously an option I wouldn't have if I got a male youngster. If it would be asking for trouble though, I'd be happy with a boy!
Thanks in advance.

I think its really down to the horses themselves. You could have just as many problems with a filly or colt I think its all down to their personalities.

Part of my nanny herd for my weanlings each year are geldings. It's a mixed nanny herd with mares and geldings and interestingly enough the foals are more often than not away across the field with the geldings.

Trouble is, you won't know until you try it.

Best case, they all get on OK and the filly is boss! Worst case, the geldings will fight each other to be best friend with the filly. Or even the geldings gang up and bully the younger one.

I have a 2.5 year old filly with two geldings 15 and 16. It took a few weeks but they are now all together and seem to have worked out the pecking order. Had a bit of trouble with my horse as he will not tolerate her too close and she's very friendly. Kept him apart for a while, but one day he had had enough of being on his own and jumped the electric fence to be with the other two, since then they seem to have come to an arrangement.

My three year old Shagya filly is with my 34 year old gelding. I often use him as a nanny because I know he won't ever kick them. She adores him. He is also ace when we start backing them, she has already been out on a leading rein to visit spooky things and did not turn a hair.
