I have recently purchased a foal through one of the German auctions and I'm looking at keeping it over there for a few years. I have no other foals for him to run with so I thought this would be the sensible thing to do. He is currently insured through the auction house but this will stop once he leaves the breeders. Does anyone have any experience with insuring horses in a foreign company or had a similar situation?

Hi Ferdimb,

I'd be surprised if you could insure him for anything other than death. When I enquired about my foals all the I could find was death - no vets' fees. would be happy to PM you the name of the insurer though as he came with excellent recommendations and he was very helpful and patient (even when I decided not to insure!!).

Slightly off topic but I agree that's probably the best decision for the foal and will work out much cheaper in the long run as foal livery in Germany is so inexpensive!

I replied on your other thread, look at LV versicherung, Bahlmann konzepte, and Uelzener, but the last post on there does give some good information as well. Good luck with him :)

I have a friend who does youngster livery- very experienced and just south/west of Hannover- her best friend is an English speaking horse vet who lives only a mile away :) PM if you want contact info :) i've asked and no one insures vets fees in Germany, probably worth putting some money away each month to "self" insure instead.

people do insure for vets fees in Germany ... just perhaps not as many as in UK .. I use Uelzener .. seem to be good , customer service was good when I was setting mine up, but luckily have not had to make a claim yet , so no experience on how the claims go.
As Frodo said though, think it would probably be the same as in the UK, but at least the first 30 days would not be covered on a foal
