Keeping a horse.

I've been on two different yards recently:

Yard 1
outdoor school with a light. Cross country course, plenty of space to ride around as off road hacking, pairs or small group turn out. Nice barn stables, toilet, lounge, kitchen etc.

£100 pm for rent (stable and field and use of facilities) in the summer
Haynets £2 a go and Straw £1 for a giant slice - 1enough for a small rubber matting bed
£2 a check if you were away
£185 for rent in the winter - included the above, with all hay and all straw - totally ad lib you used what you wanted.
£2 to turn out or bring in
£5 to muck out

Yard 2
2 outdoor schools (20x40, 20x60) both floodlit, 1 indoor school (20x40), indoor washbox with heated water, covered horse walker, indoor lunge pen, 300 acres of off road riding.

£30 a week for stable and individual grazing
£33 a month for hay and haylege - use what you want ad lib
£5 dust extracted chopped straw
£1.50 bring in or turn out
£3 muck out

On top of this - own feed - mines cheap to keep Bag of chaff lasts about 3-6 months. And she's out fo work now so not eating anything else as she's part native and doesn't need it.

She's on full livery without riding at yard 2 now
£80 a week 7 day muck out, turn out, bring in, hay, straw, feed all included.

Shoes - £58 every 8 weeks (but I'm changing this to 6 or 7)
£65 for vitamin and minerals suppliment which has lasted 7 months so far - but if she were in regular work I think this would last 6-8 months in total.

Hope this helps!

Ok I'm not a moron but I'm not anky either. I'm desperate to get a horse of my own and get out and see life. I dont mind difficult/ young/ nappy. I have time and i dont mind schooling on. though i dont do alot of jumping (riding dressage horses atm as is my love). how much do you guys spend on livery/ insurance etc etc. is it possible to keep one in not very much. i work full time but im not getting millions!! lol who is. i think im scared of taking the plunge. advice please :)

Thank you

I dread to think how much I spend keeping our horses but it is normally said that if you can afford to run, tax, insure etc a second car in addition to the one you already run then you may just about be able to afford keeping a horse :( I'm not joking in the slightest in fact I think looking after a horse is more expensive.

I have a seperate account for my horsey and put £275 a month into it. Obviously winter costs more than the summer as my boy is stabled at night so there is hay, straw and feed to buy. The £275 covers livery, hay, straw, feed, shoes, insurance, vaccs, worming, dentist and lessons. I build up 'left over' money each month and pay for my insurance in one go. It's breaks down roughly to (yearly):-
DIY Livery £1200
Hay £150
Straw £150
Feed £200
Shoes £390
Dentist, vaccs, worming £200
Insurance £590......that's £110 MORE than last year with no claims last year and a horse that's 1 year older - he's only 5 now!
Total £2880 per year before buying rugs, stable toys, lessons, menage hire, tack, tack and rug repairs, etc, and the list goes on.
Hope this helps! It's not a cheap past time but it's well worth every penny!!

mines £45 a week (inc. hay and shavings)!

£40 7 weeks shoes. (fronts only)
£5 every 2/3 months feed :D
£30 a month insurance
(+ wormers/vaccs etc)

and then any other bits i spoil her with

im at uni and work and run a car /....... so im incredibly tight. :D but if shes needs the vet/physio etc she gets.... no hesitation :) so i have accounted for that too for savings :)

I think mines pretty cheap (ish) for 13.1hh NF pony, Cushings/Laminitis

£148 a month DIY livery including unlimited Hay and Straw
£20 every 6 weeks trim by Farrier
£20 a every 2/3 months feed
£30 a month Cushings - loads of herbal stuff
£15 whenever wormed (estimate) cant remember how much wormers are
£60 injections and teeth rasped once a year by vet
£10 a week turnout/bring in cost.

dont think i have missed anything.

or maybe sharing with someone? Half the cost then!

yes, or loaning?

heres my breakdown....

assisted livery- £200 per month
farrier -£70 every 6 wks
feed/supplements- approx £20 per month
back man- £40 every 6 months
dentist - about £60? every 6 months
saddle check- £45 every 6 months
insurance -£45 per month

thats (for me) the very basics i havent included jabs and worming but obviously you would need those too. Everone has a different budget/horse

.............actually, after reading that back this is just a fraction of it. It really is never ending with horses no joke!

ALL worth it though!:D

Ooooh, dangerous...lol

per horse per month (DIY with stable, turnout and floodlit arena)
Livery £120
Bedding £20 (wood pellets on matting)
hay £45 (though I bought it all in June so cost was already spent)
feed and supplements £25
feet £40

for me times that by 2 horse = £500 per month for just the basics.

Then on top of that there is insurance, teeth, backs and wormong, and all the extras.

Gosh there's some pampered neddies there!

I budgeted £5000 a year to do my hobby.

Monthly:
Livery £60
Hay £20
Bed £2
Feed £10
Feet £50
Insurance £23
Supplements £10 (joints, laminitis, general health)

Essential extras (Averaged out)
Back £10
Teeth £4

Equipment: £2000

Apart from the odd excess charge, competition fees, trailer, land rover, other miscellaneous items it's around about £2.5k per year.

This is great, I've just calculated I've got some dosh left over... hmmmm what can I buy????

yes, or loaning?

I am in the exact same position, unsure if my salary will cover living and a lil horse for me without eating into other halfs wage etc. We don't keep our money separate but is it fair to ask him to pay for the horse that i will use!?

Only thing with loaning is that as far i know it is the same cost apart from the initial cost of buying a horse/pony....maybe i'm wrong?

I keep stressing over whether it's the right time to buy my own etc so think i will look for another share and when things feel more secure i will go for it....been waiting long enough for one that i can truly call my own!
