Having recently discovered that my horse is allergic to rye grass ,amongst many other things, we have reseeded one of our paddocks with non- rye grass. Its coming uppat because the birds are eating most of the seed.
There seem to be lots of ideas out there for stopping this but has anyone had experience of what really works?

I had the same issue a few years back - depending on the bird species...mainly sparrows, some crows, magpies....i ended up putting around 40 6foot gardening canes spaced evenly throughout the field and used ripped apart to be long, white swing bin liners, attached to the top of the canes with an elastic band. Theyd waft in the wind...make a slight noise...it helped.
Also, do you have an adjoining grass area to graze horses in?....as their presence will scare many birds, judging by my horses entrance into the fiellds and the scattering of birds.

You’ll find birds going for seed during very early hours of the morning light, or dusk times....so companion graze close by during those times if possible.

Also i scattered about 20kg per acre to allow for inevitable bird robbery! But i also wanted a very thick sward..
