Can anyone suggest a way I can keep my gypsy cob’s very thick feather’s trimmed relatively short without actually clipping his legs?

I’ve used scissors before to cut away the bulk of the feather prior to clipping but you get a horrible step in the hair when you do this.

The front’s of his legs will be left as is as he’s not too hairy there, the area around the cornet band can be tidied with scissors but I need a way to keep the feathers at the back nice and neat.

I’ve tried a thinning blade (just bought a cheap one from boots to test it) but it didn’t seem to cut that well and he wasn’t too keen on me using it.

Any thoughts/suggestions are welcome!

As TT says but dont get hairdressing thinning scissors. Get dog grooming thinning scissors. They are bigger and will cope better with the very thick hair. Buy half decent ones (I can recommend a couple of sites to use) cos the very cheap ones are pretty crap. :D

That would be great SM. I only used normal scissors to tidy them the other day but it was just to hack as much of the feather of as we could before clipping them.

Any links would be greatly appreciated!

i find the curly scissors are brill as then you can get quite close without accidently stabbing them or yourself!! and the comb thingy like hairdressers do but dont do it with a hangover as its best to bend down to do it rather than crouch!!
