Can anyone recommend me a good wound treatment that will stay on and keep flies off? My mare has sustained a surface gash to her shoulder and the flies are doing their best to make a meal of it which is worrying me (and annoying her!) Its clean and no swelling but it'll not heal up if the flies keep chewing it, urrghhh!!
I tried popping her fly rug on but it rubbed the wound so looking for some sort of paste that will stay put or somethign to help dry it up?

Tricky one. if the wound was clean and dry I would try cow salve, but you need to be careful not to stop the air aiding the healing process.

Red Horse HoneyHeal is really good at sticking and staying put, I used it on a cut recently and no flies went near it. After a couple of days it was healed well enough to leave without anything on.

A product called Vetsalve which is essentially petroleum jelly with fly repellent in it. My vet gave it to me when I had a horse with a similar problem and it seemed to work well.

We had a filly here waiting to go to Germany, so OF COURSE she grazed her leg! Not a cut as such, just a raw graze which looked awful.

Spoton on forelock and tail, also wiped around (but not touching) the wound area on a tissue (use rubber gloves) really helped. Just 1cc on the forelock avoiding eyes of course and about 2ccs on her tail.

The wound was initially treated three times a day with a dressing that behaves a bit like clear Stockholm tar. I can't give you the name but it was about £8 for a ridiculously small tub, but it did work. If you don't mind the mess, standard Stockholm tar would work and is what we'd use if a sheep is nicked during shearing. It gets everywhere and stick to everything but it does work and isn't too expensive.

When most of the wound had healed, we just applied salt water with a rose sprayer. That is great for closing up wounds. But it stings!

Second Vetsalve, its brilliant stuff. I just used on my mare to keep flies out, its also got citronella in to help ward off the nasty little things. Also seems to speed up the healing process.
