Keeping him fit without hunting every week?

How do you keep your horses fit for hunting when they're not out at least once a week? I've managed to get mine out cubbing a few times so far this season and he keeps up no problem, though our cubbing has been fairly slow with lots of standing around. He's usually ready for home by the 3 hour point but that's because his brains is fried more than anything else!

He's currently being worked 6 days per week, usually consisting of... 2 x 1hr walker sessions in the week (is also ridden these days), 1 day schooling (45 mins or so), 1 day long reining & poles, 1 jumping session/fast work in arena (big arena!), 2 x hacks (1hr in the week plus up to 2 hrs on one weekend day), and he either goes for a lesson, on a fun/farm ride or goes cubbing the other weekend day (or another hack if not a party). He's fed virtually no hard feed (other than a bit of chaff for joint supplement) as he doesn't need it and although he's reasonably fit, I don't feel I'm doing enough currently to keep him fit enough to hunt sporadically - obviously if he was hunting every week, that in itself would keep him fit.

He is a v good doer, 17hh IDxTB, and needs a fair amount of work to keep him trim. The plan is to have a day out as a visitor in a week or so, and if all goes well, buy a 6 day visitor package. So, I need him fit enough to manage half a day's hunting easily (inc. jumping) but I'm not sure what I'm doing with him at the moment is enough? I don't need him fit enough for twice weekly hunting and the only way to get him that fit is to be out more often anyway, but I do need him fitter than he is. I don't care if being fitter winds him up (I know some people complain when their horses get too fit), I can deal with that, but do need to know what extra I need to add in, or what I need to change. In the week I can only ride in the evenings bar one day, which is usually a v early morning hack, and I do have access to big fields that I can use as gallops (the racehorses on the yard do).

Thanks :)

wow he has a nice busy lifestyle!! :) sounds like if your working him like that he should be plenty fit enough to go hunting IMO, but if you're concerned then i guess use the gallops, long hacks with plenty of gallops, maybe interval training in the big arena i like that :) errrrr but otherwise it doesnt sound like cause for concern, but thats just my point of view! :)

He loves to be busy! He gets naughty and nappy if he doesn't have plenty to do, and he absolutely loves to go to new places (though he would be happiest if those new places were always hunting!), so I like to keep his brain engaged.

Sounds like you've got the right idea... I think he should be fit enough, especially if you're sensible and take him home before he gets too tired.

I manage to keep Ron fit enough for hunting with 2 days hunting most weeks, and an hour or so's hack on a sunday and usually some evening show jumping midweek... but then he's naturally quite fit, and couldn't give a pile of poo if he's worked or not!

Thanks jen. If I had the time and money to get out twice a week then Monty would be much fitter and I wouldn't be worrying. I guess I'm just aware that hunting is hard work and because I don't have time (or money) to hunt him every week, I want to make sure I keep him fit in between times. It's probably going to work out that I'll be hunting maybe once a month, once every 3 weeks. I will try to get out on farm rides if I can once a month as well, and do those at a decent pace, so that will be good for all round fitness.

Unfortunately, the one bit of ID Monty did inherit is being a good doer so he needs plenty of work and lives on fresh air.

It sounds like you are doing enough already. Can pick your days so you can go on a quiet day?
I have the same problem with Hattie this season as she is at home not at work. She's not getting as much exercise as your boy but I'm doing very quiet easy days in country I know really well so I'm hoping she will be fit enough.

You wouldn't believe how much (little) some of the horses at the yard get exercise wise and they are going to opening meet tomorrow! If they come back sound or even alive I will be amazed.

Irishcob, this really winds me up as the unfit horses always do come back sound! Whereas to me it seems mine and the fitter horses always end up injured (so unfair)!

ChestnutCob, his workload sounds just right to me.

Chestnut cob, he sounds like he should be plenty fit enough as it is. If you're still worried, don't underestimate walk work for fitness, and stick him on the walker for another couple of sessions a week. I'd be loathed to increase the amount of fast work he gets, as it is more strain on tendons etc. Walk work helps condition legs, so helps with their "toughness" :)
