Hi there - I am desperately seeking advice as to where to keep my horse within close proximity of Mile End/Bow in East London. There is a yard in Leyton but it has a very long waiting list. Am desperate! Thanks!!

Have you tried Aldersbrook Riding School - they are just down the road from me on Wanstead Flats. I did look at them, but they don't have any grass turnout which for me is not an option.

You could also try Lea Valley Riding Centre - they also do livery.

I personally keep mine further out, cheaper and more grass turnout available, but I have my own transport so it is not a problem.

There are various yards round High Beech which if you have a car are easy to get to from East London.

Thanks. I have looked at Aldersbrook but it didn't really tick the right boxes. Lee Valley looks good and is very close but they have a huge waiting list. I have my own transport and am happy to travel further out - are there any yards that you could recommend and how long do you think they would take to get to? Sorry for the bombardment of questions!

There are quite a few around Epping forest:
Bury Farm
Nightingale Riding School
Albany Livery Yard
Sovereign fields
Pine Lodge
Woodlands Riding Centre
Amersmead livery

and there's probably about another dozen or so that I can't think of!!

good luck

I used to keep two of mine at Manor Farm in Mott Street. Right in the middle of the forest, they do have a livery service which when I was there was very reasonable and good. Facilities are ok but not great, outdoor school but it was not the best surface. However, they do offer lots of turnout. Is 8 miles from Wanstead down the Epping Road - about 20 minutes drive. Great place for happy hackers rather than competition types. Fleur was a competition type, hence why I moved her to Harolds Park.

Harolds Park Farm - Bumbles Green - between Waltham Abbey and Harlow. Bit further drive - about 30 minutes from Wanstead. Big yard - about 70 horses. Good facilities for either happy hackers or competition types. Only moved as I wanted a quieter yard for Cairo and winter turnout which can be restricted at HPF. Do miss the XC course and the horse walker.

What I do is have two days a week full livery and mornings done for me which works out really well - am hoping to move further out in the next year as really am not a London person.

Good luck.

I have a couple of friends that have small yards in the adjoining railway sidings where they have kept their horses for years! They school them in the park and hack them out on the local and not so local streets. If you are looking for something with grazing and a menage with floodlighting/indoor arena they you need to go out to Essex/Hertfordshire/North London. As far as facilities and off road riding the best yard in my mind is Mote End Farm in Mill Hill London NW7

Thanks a lot - I will look all these up. Am hoping to get involved in a bit more eventing so a yard with cross country would be great. What was the name of the place near Epping with the cross country facilities?

There are two places:

One is Harold Park Farm and the other is Hobbs Cross who have XC facilities.

I have been to shows at Hobbs Cross and it looks nice but have not stabled there. See post above for HPF.

In terms of ease from East London - either is not bad to get too, HPF is on more major roads which may be a consideration in bad weather. I am now just down the road from them in Epping Green and it takes me about 25 mins in the car unless the traffic is really bad. I can get from Holborn to Epping in 50 mins on my bike after work in the summer.

There are also plenty of yards in the Waltham Abbey/Nazing Harlow area - if you can travel this far, let me know and I'll check out Eastwick Lodge this weekend as I have to pop in for grub for the boys and can look at their notice board.

Personally I would rather travel out further and have the joys of the countryside, but there are days when it can be a bind to spend an hour travelling to and from the yard, hence why I have assisted livery.

You could head off down the A13 or A20 and into kent. There's several yards within 20 mins of Greenwich. I kept mine about half an hours drive (in good traffic) from central london for about 18 months 'til we moved out last year.

Some good riding if you want to come further out but we had all year turn out and an indoor and outdoor school. Full lovery for about £80 per week too so not badly priced.

Wow - cycling to Epping from the City is very impressive!! Unfortunately I think that Nazing etc is just a bit far out with my sometimes horrendous hours. I will definitely look into Epping area and will look down into Sidcup area too.. although I get a bit scared about the Blackwell Tunnel traffic! Any further advice gratefully received!! Many thanks for all your help so far!

Nazeing is lovely, I would love to stable there.

Hobbs Cross has no winter turn out, but does have occasional comps on site.

Come out to the dark side (essex)........it's far more fun!!

Hi again - I have tried to find contact information for the various livery yards in Epping/Nazing but am having some difficulty. If anyone had any telephone numbers/addresses I would be extremely grateful. Thanks again x
