So I have a tb mare. Was just wondering how everyone keeps their horses toasty in their stables.
Without central heating!

It's supposed to be a cold one again this year and my stable is in the middle of a field. Really well sheltered but that doesn't stop the cold.

What are your tricks to keeping your horses warm? Leg wraps? Deep bed?Just a rug?
Especially from everyone with thin skinned horses like me.

Only asking as this is my first winter with a full tb. Want to keep her happy.

Are deep litter beds considered acceptable these days? Used to do this with a shavings bed and you could get some real heat off it. You need a horse that doesn't dig around though.

Well yes tbs are very special but they are quite capable of keeping themselves warm if unclipped. All that's needed is a good supply of hay as eggs said.

Rug if it makes you feel better as that is what rugging is all about to me anyway. Just make sure that when you rug you compensate fully for the warmth his own coat would have provided. A thin sheet is worse as all it does is flatten the hairs and it loses its heat trapping ability :)
