We're having problems keeping a muzzle on a Welsh 14.2 pony (very Araby head). It's the first time she's had to wear one, and she is not happy. She is also very determined, and in the last 12 hours has got it off twice (worn attractively round her neck instead). I don't want to have to burden her with a headcollar as well unless I have to. She has a very small muzzle but wide cheeks. I'm wondering if the solution is to do the throatlash part up quite tight - but don't want to throttle her! Any advice/experiences would be most welcome.
Thanks.

I use the Dinky ponies muzzle on my pony. It adjusts round the nose & throat & over the head. My pony doesn't like wearing it either but has given up trying to get it off. Check their website, various sizes, good value, well made and comfy for the pony (sizes up to horse)

Took my boy 3 days of stropping & dumping his muzzle in the bath to get used to it. Someone on here suggested Plaiting a section of mane over the top & into his forelock to keep muzzle from coming off & it has worked a treat!! Just had to buy a bigger size today though as after 5 days the smaller size had rubbed a sore patch under his chin. Good luck!!

You need to buy a greenguard headcollar in relevant size (approx £10) don't use the headcollar itself, use the centre strap and extra throat lash, this stopped my horse rubbing it off on the nearest gate/fence by pulling it down off his nose (centre strap) extra throat lash stops it coming off over the head when they roll etc, you have to do the throat lash up quite tight but not too tight to stop breathing lol

I have just ordered my mare a dinky rugs one it will be the first time shes had to wear one as well
Does anyone use a full face fly mask with the muzzle as well? my mare always has hers on but not sure how it will fit inside/over the muzzle?

Thanks so much for the tips. I think the muzzle may be a Fieldguard ?? (I didn't buy it). But it's the same one my horse has, and she gets on fine with hers.

Yes, the Welshie knows how to eat - judging by the blades of grass inside. But she is just thoroughly put out by the indignity of it. If this fails perhaps her owner will go for a Dinky one or one with a central strap. The plaiting the mane idea is brilliant too. I'll try that when I put her out this afternoon - heaven knows she has enough of it. Thanks, everyone.

Mine could get out of the Shires muzzle at first but as soon as I started plaiting his mane over the headpiece he hasn't got rid of it once.
