Hi all, hope you are keeping well in this mini heatwave! only a few more months till winter...!

Ive got a sweet itch mare who is in during most of the day (grazing limited due to gassy colic and weight!) but her stable is cooking hot. Does anyone have ideas on keeping the stable a bit cooler?! She’s hoses down and always had hay so distracted from it but I feel so bad when she’s all hot and sweaty.

was looking as getting a chain for the door so I can leave door open for air circulation but not sure I trust her not to barge out! We are on sight so can keep a close eye though.

any bright ideas?!

thank you
G x

We rigged up an electric fan for an old cushings pony needing to be kept cool. Securely fastened to the eves above his door out of his reach with the power cord tacked along the door line and outside the stable wall to the nearest socket. He could choose to move inot and out of the air stream. It also kept the flies out!

It’s worth extending the kickboards up to the eaves, we did this with our original very basic field shelter/stables. The air gap between the exterior cladding and the kick boards provides good thermal insulation.

That is assuming that the stable walls get the sun on them (they do here).

Current stables also have an onduline over sterling board roof, and that gives pretty good thermal insulation, too.

I have put fans outside the stable doors today (I tie them onto a shavings bale in the wheelbarrow) works really well.
