We have decided to retain a filly and a colt from last year. Currently all of our broodmares, stallion and colt and filly from last year live together with no problems. He is a very decent and well mannered stallion. I like to keep things as natural as possible, hence mum and filly still have a very close bond.

The herd is very close in general and become very upset if it is disturbed. So i have a dialemma, can the filly and colt stay with the stallion this year or not?

fillys mum is boss of the herd. And i think it is really important that the yearlings have an older role model. But all of my mares are due in foal again this year and our stallion won't cover in hand.

What should i do??

P>S They were weaned in November in the field next door with 5 other foals all at the same time until mum's milk dried up, and then they went back in with mum again.

The filly is 10months now, and the colt 13 months.

:)

well if you want your yearling filly in foal then yes. Otherwise I'd remove her. They start having seasons at about 12 months old so she'll start egging your stallion and the colt on...

Definitely remove her or she could be covered by your stallion or the colt, I'd also take the colt out too once your stallion realises he has nuts then he could hurt him - colts tend to do better while they are young in a bachelor herd with other colts and geldings of varying ages. We have our main stallion in with mares and a bachelor herd of 2 young stallions and 4 geldings and they have a great time wrestling and playing together - it's what happens in the wild.

Ditto - my boy is as quiet as they come and he runs with his mares and their foals, but he would not tolerate another entire in his field , even a yearling, as he would see it as competion and he would certainly cover the mare if she came into season. I say move both of them.
