please can any1 help this is really doin my head in when ever i take my horses rugs off he scratches like mad and then comes out in loads of big lumps more like loads of raised areas he looks well and i cant put my finger on what is making him do this.
His skin always looks quite dry and very thin skinned.
it isnt his food because hasnt changed his food in ages.
He does come out in protein lumps if on hayledge so he is now on a very very dry hayledge which is practicly hay and seems ok on that, could it b the sand in the paddock from him rolling maybe or i have thought it could be the straw
any advise would be greatfull

Do you ever add oil to his feed - it can really help with the condition of the skin.

I would look at his feed. But I would also look at whether his is just too warm. Is he clipped?

If he is clipped - have you tried bathing him in a mild solution of Head and Shoulders?

My horses are all itching like crazy at the moment as they are changing their coats and will rub against anything they can until they make themselves sore. Are you sure it isn't just that he is changing his coat and the lumps are caused by him scratching so much? A bath might help him to feel more comfortable, especially if you use something like tea tree shampoo which will help settle his skin.

well thats what i thought have doing and i have started the last few days to put corn oil on his feed for his coat and hopefully that might help slightly thanks hun 4 ya advise

he was fully clipped about 4 months ago for the first time and is rugged up but doesnt seem too hot at all when i check him, i have also bathed him in hibi scrub a few wks ago but i will do it again 2day why it is nice weather and will wash his rugs tonight but dont think it is his rugs.
his coat does seem to have gone worse since i have clipped him i dont know whether clipping him made him worse or ot was just that when he was wooly u just couldnt see the lumos as much
ta la

Also keep clear of using ANY persil washing detergents- I have seen so many lumpy horse's backs cured by not using persil on numnahs. Non bio seems worse than bio

u wouldnt believe it went down last night and his skin was totally clear and wasnt itching when i took his rugs off i am really starting to think it is defo the sand in the paddock cause he started to itch once he had a roll in the paddock and yesterday he didnt roll and was ok i will not have to let him roll again and see if that helps thanks 4 ya advise guys x

hello it's ok to use full stops and any other punctuation you would like to because it makes reading posts so much easier really good to hear you may have found out what may be causing the spots.

bizarre as this may sound - it sounds like my excema! I get dry itchy patches on my skin and when i scratch (usually in my sleep) i come up in what looks like nettle rash!

Have you tried adding oil to his feed? up to a cupful in each feed should help. Linseed/flax would be best.

Is he just itchy from changing his coat? Does he get too hot? Try washing him with a bucket of warm water with a teaspoon full of "head and shoulders sensitive" in, and a sponge. Wet the coat, and scrub with the sponge. Then sweat scaper it off, and dry him with a towel. When he's all done, put a clean fleece rug on until he's properly dry.

Try giving him a good brush with as stiff a brush as he'll tolerate, and use it as a bonding experience (let him groom you back!)

yes i have started to give him oil in his feed, so watch this space with the oil.
He was really itchy again yesterday when i took his rugs off and got a few lumps again where he has been itching.
Washed all his rugs and took his fleece off so only got one rug on now aswell to rule out overheating which i was convinced it wasnt anyway.
thanx 4 all ya comments
