Minor rant here (sorry)

Yesterday morning a dog wandered across my patio. I went out and easily caught an elderly Red Setter. No collar.
I couldn't remember where I put my microchip scanner and had an appointment to leave for so rang the council to report dog found. Finally convinced the operator that the dog warden didn't have to collect the dog as he was safe in my isolation run and would be scanned that day. Operator was concerned that unless they collected the dog they couldn't charge.

While I was out I phoned the local police support point and a couple of vets as well as the Irish Setter Breeders club.
After finding the scanner I evetually found a microchip near this fellow's elbow. Rang in the number and got his name, an address two villages away and three phone numbers.

First two numbers were dead lines. (rant 1) Third was the ex who was driving and quickly rang me back.

Dog was collected by his daughter around 8pm. He had been missing since morning and they had not reported him gone (rant 2)
He keeps getting out and the bitch next door is in season (rant 3) - they know which bit of fence he goes through (rant 4) and they live 100 yards from the M1!
The dog stank! I commented on his smell and was told it was because he lives outside and they have a smallholding with horses. I pointed out that my dog lives out and I have chickens & horses and she doesn't smell like that.
They bundled him away very quickly.

He is a lovely old boy with totally unconcerned owners.

I have to say that the Irish Setter Breeders Club were very proactive. I have been to some of their seminars and they are well worth attending with the next one on March 28th.

I know similar sort of people. Thank god there are caring people like you about. There are only so many times you can tell someone their dog keeps escaping because they have a gaping hole in their fencing/keep leaving a gate open etc Sometimes when the dog is lost for several hours its the wake up call they need!

And sod's law comes into play here - years ago our two bitches escaped one stormy night when a fence blew down, and both were hit by the same car.
Our top show prospect had her leg broken and my mum's old girl fractured her hip.
And yet other people who can't be arsed and don't have the manners to keep their dogs on their property and under control, theirs live to a ripe old age, totally unscathed. Of course!

So true.

My old dog got out one day, within minutes we were out calling and looking for him, he was later found drowned in a neighbours pool.

Yet, neighbours dog repeatedly takes itself out for walkies and always returns unscathed.
