Hi there,

My new dog has just been diagnosed with kennel cough (she has been in kennels last week, as I got her from a rescue centre), and as she is not allowed out for walks I wondered if anyone had any tips on how to keep her entertained and healthy. I have a garden (about 60ft) but she is not the sort of dog who will chase a ball or toy for ages. The vet said not to take her out for walks for 3 days after she stops coughing, so I am thinking it could be at least 4-5 days without walks and don't want her getting stressed. She isn't a young dog with boundless energy (she is a 9yr JRT) but she enjoys her walks. I am cutting her feed back a little bit to compensate the lack of exercise.

Any tips or advice is much appreciated

If it really is Kennel cough, I don't think she should do much ball or toy chasing at all, the general advice over here is rest, good quality food and more rest. Actually, if she's energetic it can be very tiring to train passivity, laying, sitting or standing still.

If she can eat without problem and you're giving "hard feed", instead of putting it in a food bowl you could put it in some brain-exercising toys, I have some from http://www.nina-ottosson.com/DogProducts.htm (my dogs favourite is Dog Tornado Wood) and if I've understood correctly Prose's Stella enjoys http://www.boston-terrier-challenge.com/tests/busy-buddy-twist-treat.html .

Even dogs that tolerate having their nails cut usually gets tired by having them done, maybe you could do that or pretend to be doing it. The JRT's I know of isn't exactly any balls of fluff, but being still while getting some general grooming can also be tiring.

Good luck and hope she gets well soon.

Agree with FLH, noothing that will result in exertion, as this makes the coughing worse
