My dog got kennel cough in April this year, after staying a couple of nights in our local boarding kennels.

I (stupidly) hadn't realised that kennel cough was not routinely included in his annual vaccinations, so he's never been vaccinated against it. I will request this in the future but he's not due for boosters until January 2017.

Meanwhile, I need to put him in the kennels for a couple of nights again at the end of this month. Will he have any immunity from having had kennel cough previously? Is he at any less (or more) risk than previously? I'm trying to decide whether to vaccinate now or leave it til his boosters are due.

Why not just get his KC vaccine done now, then he'll be covered for the next year.

None of the kennels around here would accept an unvaccinated dog.

I would have him vaccinated now if he has to go into kennels again. As above, I am surprised the boarding kennels allowed him to stay without being vaccinated against kc.

Thanks all, I'll get him booked in and ask my vet whether to get all jabs now or keep the boosters to January.

The kennels ask for vaccination card, which I always provide, but they don't stipulate what they need to be vaccinated against.

I don't insist on KC vaccs for boarding and in fact can't accept any dog that has had teh intranasal vaccs in the preceding six weeks. It isn't very effective and is known to cause outbreaks.

We've just changed our weekend plan due to lack of kennel cough vaccine..

Instead of romantic weekend for two in Dublin, we are now going to Portrush with 5yo son and the dog lol :)

Will get it done when she gets her annual booster :)

My mother was talked into getting her puppy vaccinated against kennel cough.

I then looked after the puppy and all five of my dogs got kennel cough from it!! People should be warned that a dog who has recently had the kennel cough vaccine can give other dogs kennel cough!!

Fwiw I have had two Vets tell me that the vaccine is a waste of time.

Our vet says the same, as KC, like the common cold, is not simply one strain. So vaccination can be rather hit and miss. We don't require it for boarders. Nor do any of the kennels locally.
